Get a reel where you can adjust both the magnetic brake and the centrifugal brake. When you get them both adjusted to her casting style there will be few to no backlashes. Any Lews with the MSB (Multi-Setting Braking) or the Bass Pro Qualifier or the Carbonlite series. I'm sure there are others but my wife uses these without issues.

Hand size is something to consider when using a baitcaster. If she has small hands, a shimano 50 size reel may be what she is able to palm. There is a new Curado I 70 size coming that may fit that bill for a new reel.

I think the Lew's reels are the best casting reels I've used. However, I taught my sister how to throw a bait caster with an Abu black max and she can throw any reel u put in her hand.

I gave up on mine with a baitcaster................its a spincast all the way. I got her a Zebco Omega and saved myself a lot of grief.
Thanks, Billy

I've taught many people how to throw a baitcaster. True, you must learn how to properly set the reel, but many are NOT aware of "proper technique", which incorporates theories of centrifugal force. The biggest mistake one can make is to have your thumb on top of spool pointing straight up to the sky. Turning your wrist down to somewhere between 45 and 90 degrees to make the spool vertical will significantly decrease backlashing. Ooooh, and knowing how to use your thumb as a brake, in addition to the reel's mechanical brake.. Like anything, it just takes some practice, and learning proper technique.
Many use a spinning reel as an easier alternative, but those things can make the biggest mess too......GOOD LUCK, and remember whatever reel you're using to make sure that drag is snug. Lol

I'm not saying conventional is not the way to go for those techniques you mentioned. But if she can use a spinner efficiently then why not encourage her to just improve casting them?
When you watch the pros on TV there are many of them from the north and east that really only use spinners and manage to land everything that we fish for here in the south.
However quality spinners are just as expensive as our conventional's.
