Is there any info on what depths the cats are going to be found based on water temperature or even time of the year or is it going to be different on every lake and just hit or miss. Some guys seem to be constantly getting on fish. I know it gets down to time on the pond, but I'm just wondering if there is an edge to be had.

Not sure where you are fishing, and I am by FAR not any kind of expert but I did go out with a guide on Lewisville few years back, a really good one, he told me that he could go about anywhere on that lake about anytime of year and if he put out 12 rods with fresh bait he would catch catfish.
Further more, it was winter when we went, deep cold winter and we caught fish in 45 feet on creek channel and in the back of the creek where it came in at in 3 Feet of water...
So go figure?

with all of the boat ramps closed around me, we tried some new water on Christmas Eve. Ray Hubbard. It was weird. Bluebird skies with our shirts off on Christmas Eve. Just doesn't feel like Christmas. Started in 25 foot of water near a submerged railroad track. Marking fish but the only taker was a 9 inch channel cat on an size 8 hook. Moved and achored in some trees in 10 feet of water. Nothing. Moved to a point in the same depth. Nothing. Lots of comarants nesting, so tried flipping some trees under their nests nothing. We only had 4 hours to fish with it being christmas eve. We only had an hour and a half left. Went and found some current in 2 - 5 feet of water. Set up three anchors and got one strong pull down on each stop. Missed one some how. Pole was in water. Don't know how the hook missed. Caught the other two. 3 and 7 pounds. Then left to do Christmas Eve. If I had a time machine, I think we could have caught some fish. It took a while for us to find a workable pattern, but the fish seemed to be scattered. Seemed like we were catching loners. Water was 55 degrees. Fish that cooperated were very aggressive and hit hard. Even the 9 inch channel cat.

We fished Hubbard yesterday as well.. Managed 1 Blue about 7 lbs. 4 ft of water. Had 2 other hits but didn't get the hook set. Lots of debris on the bottom made it tough. Pretty day but I feel the big moon we had the night before and clear warm day hurt us. Going to try Lake Pat Cleburne today. We will see what happens.

As the water gets colder the shad will go deep to escape the cold water on top. Look for shad balls on the depth finder, and the blues will be where the buffet is. Individual arches around the shad ball is a good sign. An even better sign is if the shad ball is broken up with arches around it. That means it's dinner time for the blues.
