Any deep cycle battery recommendations? any one running Duracells?

Have 4 interstate batteries. 2 of my tm batteries are 5 years old. 1 is 3yrs. cranking battery replaced after 1 year.

Not to hijack but with all the high powered electronics on boats now, is anyone running a straight cranking battery and having issues after a long time of fishing? I have a Marine dual purpose battery (crank/deep cycle) and I still worry about fishing at night with the LEDs on and charts running that I'm going to get stranded.

Haulin, it's all about capacity...reserve minutes in the case of running low-drain loads such as electronics and LEDs. I agree with the use of a dual/purpose battery; go with a size 29 or 31 with high reserve. Unless you're running some super-output LEDs, the (milli)amps for those usually don't add up to a lot. Pumps can eat a lot; use an auto-cycle when you can. A place you can save power is with the charts:

1) Dim the display as much as you can. Don't leave the brightness cranked up; that screen actually eats a decent part of the power consumed by each unit, and the bigger the screen, the hungrier it is.
2) Put units you don't need to look at for a while into sleep (low-power) mode. Most will return to active use without waiting for a software boot cycle. If not used for an extended time, turn some off. A bunch of active displays may look cool, but they won't crank the outboard later!

Just about every battery discussion on this forum ends up in an argument but here goes anyway.

The difference between true deep cycle and dual purpose batteries is the difference in the thickness and construction of the plates. Dual purpose batteries are nothing more that starting batteries with heavier plates. They are intended to be starting batteries and will take light loads like electronics and lights but they will discharge faster and will not hold up to the repeated discharges that a deep cycle battery is subjected to.

Use Cabellas AGM batteries. Trolling and Cranking both. A little expensive but not when you consider no
matenance and they last 5 to 7 years. I watch and get them on sale for half price and makes them same price as other batteries.
