I keep reading posts that mention the crappie wall on lake calaveras. I have three maps of the lake and not one of them shows the crappie wall. Can someone tell me where on the lake it is located? Thanks.

The Crappie wall is straight out across from the boat ramps, there are always boats tied off to it. The wall is what keeps boats from going up the intake to the power plant.

GPS Location N29 17.245 W98 18.499

It's' marked on the map in the 2006-07 Lakes and Bays Fishing Atlas available at any Wal-Mart store.
I hope this helps you out.

Mike,

Thanks for the information. I know where you are talking about because I have checked out all the boats there last summer. I just did not think that that was the crappie wall because the guys I talked to were fishing for red fish.

The crappie wall got it's name back in the Mid 70's
I was about 10 years old and remember boats catching 100's of crappie. I can still remember dropping my Crappie rig with 2 minnows attached and pulling in 2 crappie on every drop.
The night time fishing was the best and can still see the light's under the water as boats lined up to fish.
The crappie fishing was also good in the entrance cove at the park entrance. Big boulders are piled up in the cove and we caught lots of crappie throwing jigs around the rocks.

Crappie fishing was a thing of the past as the years moved forward. Once the introduction of Talapia happened the lake really changed. But that's another topic.

Yep you are exactly correct on how it got it's name. Nowdays people refer to it as "the wall". Us oldtimers still call it the "crappie wall" and to me that will always be the name. Too many great memories of how good the crappie fishing was at one time!

I'm torn between how the fishing is today, and what it was like in the early days. If I could go back in time I'd have to say the old days was better than today. I've sampled both and I prefer catching the native species and how easy it was to catch an eye poppping string of crappie, bass (eight and nine pounders were common as dirt), or catfish!

Just one more cast!

Jimbo, Glad to see someone that remembers the past.
yes, I'd have to agree with ya- those days were great.
However- I have been chasing the talapia now with a bow-fishing rig. On some days we get 40-50 talapia.
They are good eating. But still I curse them for ruining our lake!

Rio,
I have been reading articles on how to catch talapia with a hook and bait so we are going to try that method. At my age the eyes just are not good enough for bow fishing. It is a shame about the poor crappie fishing because the wife and I were looking forward to catching crappie when we moved here last year. We have a lot of good memories about trips to Toledo bend and lake palestine when we lived in east texas.

Yes, Scott- I miss the Crappie fishing as well.
We had good trips on Choke years back.
But some of the best crappie action was on Coleto creek down by Goliad Tx.
We fished during the hot summer months and caught bunches in the river channel along all the timber.
Havn't been back in a few years.
