If the cranking battery on your outboard is drained for some reason, can you jumpstart off of your trolling motor batteries?

I've tried it before but the deep cycle TM battery is not designed for high cranking amps. I had to let it sit for a few mins then cranked up fine.

Gator, I have done it several times with no issues. I also unhooked the jumper after it starts, just as a precision.

I've done it without problems. I've been told not to by dealers and others "in the know" that trying to start off of a deep cycle is hell on your engine's electrical system.

Guess I am trying to figure out if there is something HighlandsChris knows that we don't or ???

I ran a yellowtop as my starting battery in my truck. It lasted over 6 years.

Just curious to why the original poster would even consider there would be a problem or why it couldn't/shouldn't be done. Admittedly, my initial reply was a little aggressive and for that I apologize.

If there is an issue in it, then maybe you guys know more than me instead of the other way around.

Thanks y'all. I was just asking because I did not know if it would cause any kind of problem with one being a deep cycle and the other not. Now I guess I know.
So here's one more probably stupid question but...my trolling motor is 24v so if I were to have to jumpstart from these batteries, would I use the POS post from one and the NEG post from the second one or just use both posts on one battery?
Thanks again.

Gator,

Yes, just jump from one. Beware, if you go terminals of the TM battery to terminals of the motor battery, you will get some draw down from the good battery to the dead instead of a good jump. Bass Border upthread alluded to this. Also, the connection between the clamps and the terminal is not the best so you will lose some flow there.

You ought to just rig your batteries with wingnut disconnects or something, and just move the TM battery to the big motor if you go dead. Or, just thinking I dunno if anybody hooks up a perko-switch between their main battery and one of the TM batteries in case this happens. Or, you can just get 2 batteries for your main and perko between them. That is probably how I will rig mine.

Take care.

What if you have a 36V trolling motor setup with three batteries?
