I have asked about when and where to use a football jig on the forum before but since then I have used my football jigs many times and NO bites. I have tried them in all kinds of situations and can't seem to get any confidence in it since I haven't caught a thing. I'm planning to spend a few days this winter just using the football jigs in deep water in hopes to figure them out. I'm not really sure what to do about the lack of fish being caught with this lure. Any help is much appreciated!!

If you're fishing offshore, the key is knowing how to find the fish with your graph first. You want to see fish close to, or on the bottom. Graphs typically don't lie, so if the fish aren't there or aren't close to the bottom, you're typically wasting your time with a football jig.

Just use it in place of a Carolina Rig and slow it down. I am talking about 3/4 and 1 oz. 1/2 is good too if your less than 10 feet. Just keep it simple with Green Pumpkin or Black and Blue and go fishing.

Alright. I have a lot of confidence in a fb. I've caught a lot of good fish on one. Fish it anywhere you'd fish a crig. It's my experience this time of year offshore the fish are either on bottom, where a fb is effective, or its a deep crankbait bite. I keep both handy, and change..if one technique slows down...run over a spot w a graph,if u see bait balls fish it. A lot of times just bass alone on bottom are hard to locate...if not impossible...depending on the cover and the quality of your graph. Put the e t rig and crig away and fish a fb jig, and if its slow mix a crankbaits in, somedays its just not a fb jig bite, and in the winter that can be the difference between 0 and 1 bites...

This is key in your success with the FB jig.

BassSlayer 37. I fish the football head almost exclusively in all type of cover. If you want to get some confidence this jig get around some rocks. I suggest really heavy breaded line and a med-heavy rod so you can feel every tick. Don't let it settle or you'll be buy a lot of jigs, lift your rod tip about 12 inches few rotation and reel back down at a speed just fast enough to feel the taps on the rock. I use colors the look like perch and crawl-fish. I think the sound similar to a crawl-fish moving around in the rock... I also add a rattle to the jig. They'll hammer it.. This also works around brush pile, drop offs, laydowns, etc. good luck!
