I looked up the lake records last night on Squaw Creek and it shows the biggest bass was a little over 11 lbs. I just have a hard time believing this. Also it shows that the lake record for several species of fish was caught by the same person. Is the info on TPWD correct?

A lot of times the lake records for small lakes are all held by the same person or by people with the same last name (families). I think it has more to do with the fact that most people don't bother to look up the existing records, do the paperwork and have the fish weighed with a certified scale.

It's kind of a pain, especially if you don't have your own certified scale, and getting a scale certified costs about $35 minimum and has to be redone yearly.

With the amount of 7-8lb fish I've seen come out of Squaw, an 11 isn't out of the question by any means. And like Canino stated...many small lakes have record holders by semi-local fisherman who are willing to take the time to do it.

Lake records for those small bodies of water can be really deceiving. I've broke a few lake records that I didn't realize were records at the time. Lol. I imagine most guys are like me, they just have no idea that they've broken a record.

Don't think too many fish make it that long at squaw creek, water Temps get way too high in Summer,

jimmye123 is probably right and also has not been stocked with Florida strain bass since the early 90s, just to hot to live to long. Who all can remember the bubblers that were put in at black mountain to help cool the lake in the late 90s and early 2000s. If and when they ever put Unit 3 and 4 in they are suppose to have cooling towers in i believe , Who knows that might help cool it down a little.

Parks&Wildlife has a very good program for keeping records. It is true there have probably been bigger fish caught that were not certified. The official water body records are the ones where the angler goes through the record process!

I was looking at the % Florida from TPWD survey earlier this year and the Florida are still dominant type. They tested 30 bass and 8 were 100% florida and 22 were hybrids but 83% Florida. Forks 30 bass survey only had 2 100% Florida and the 28 hybrids were 57% Florida.

My understanding of Squaw bass not getting as large as a Fork bass is metabolism. Because Squaw stays so warm year round the fish grow really fast and year round, but that shortens their longevity greatly. I do not feel the summer heat is killing anything that gets to 10 pounds, just that they die of old age much younger than a lake that is cooler most of the year.

By the way the park has a certified scale that goes up to 30 lbs. No need to take bass to butcher shop if you catch one that will put you one there and want to submit it.

When Squaw Creek reopens there will be 15lb bass caught daily. Wait....never mind.

I have seen a pic of a dead one this year that had a tilapia stuck in its mouth that would probably be record there. The pic makes me wonder how often it happens to the big ones

There has been several 10 lb fish weighed, I. The last 4 years, I think last year the average bb in a tournament was around 8.50 ish lbs, I had 1 that weighed 9.89 and a 1/2 a Tilapia in the live well. ..but not so much so far this year,

I agree about the warm water holding fish back from easily reaching sharelunker type size. however, I also agree every tournament I've done there has been 8 lb BB and even one around 10 two years ago BLT Solo.
