The deck is fiberglass. Cutting the foam is a task itself. Also, be sure to have some silicone on hand. When you cut the deck out rub a thin coat of silicone around the cut edge of plywood and fiberglass. Helps prevent rotting

When you cut the deck out rub a thin coat of silicone around the cut edge of plywood and fiberglass. Helps prevent rotting Nice! Beautiful Champ!! But please, do yourself a favor and coat the cut edges of the deck with three light coats of resin (wait about 30 min between coats). Silicone will not last. I know the directions say to use silicone, but don't. Also, I hope you cut the rest of the foam out directly below the tray...? It'll get water-logged if you don't. Make that beautiful boat last!

Glad you told me. I pulled the tray back out and sure enough the silicone was pulled from the edges. I did as you said and feel much better about that over the silicone

Good job, did the same thing in 2015 to my 03 188DC Champion. I also did the resin coating. Sure does help my back out on a long days fishing.

What kind of resin coating are you referring to?

The resin used in fiberglass. You can get it at auto part stores and several other places. I used BONDO brand. The smell sure brings back memories from when my dad and I put stick steering in our 14' Terry Bass Boat in the late 60's or early 70's.
