Finally got my buddy Nate (treebasscatcher)on to his first carp. The fishing is tough. The water is still a little high(for the flats anyway)and there is a lot of stick ups, bushes and grass. we poled my boat thru it as best we could, spooking a lot of the fish from sticks scratching the hull. I would think it would be, still, almost impossible to wade and have much luck - or fun - in that junk. we were able to spot some fish in deeper water from the boat. most of the fish in the shallower water were just buried in the brush. Oddly enough though, Nate managed to drop a fly on a fish that was in the thick of it and bag him. I thought it was an impressive feat since this is only the second fish Nate has ever caught on a fly rod. He now has one bluegill and one 5.04 pound carp under his belt.

What an honor it is to have met and now be pretty good friends with Capt.Mac..
He really knows his stuff and is very passionate about life on the water and what he calls "the game". I will say I had a cocked eyebrow just as many others have when told by Capt.Mac that he fly fishes for carp on the flats.. But after fishing with him a hand full of times and then when the water levels were better actually getting to experience the flats, I now understand "the game". Man, what an awesome experience. Somehow managing to toss a fly right in front of one and it slurp it up. Bam, game on.. It shoots off like a rocket weaving in and out of brush.. meanwhile line is peeling off the reel rapidly.. and after about 10min of fighting, what felt like an eternity.. I managed to cup him into the boat. It was great.
Now, I wont be tossing out all my senkos, spinner baits and crankbaits along with the rest of my conventional tackle for a fly rod just yet (which would tickle Capt to death) I will be thinking about the flats a lot more.. and while fishing the banks for the ever elusive largemouth i'll be wondering if there's a carp out there who's ready to play the game.. and if there is, I can count on Capt.Mac to get me to him.

Ok I just noticed Which one of you too is plugging Peterbilt lol. Nate I take it you work with capt.? And don't worry you can just have two passions like I do no need to get rid of the conventional gear. Ok ok my girl just said there are about nine different things in the outdoors I have passion about but hey I get it all in. I also get my stuff done I need too. This high water year will be great for ray bob in the coming years great spawns and protection. I know it's made the flats a little tricky this year but be way better in the long run. Congratulations again on your first carp.

Yeah one day at work it all started with "hey, you like fishing?" "yeah I like fishing, you?" "heck yeah man".
The rest is history lol
Me and Capt. were thinking the same about ray bob.. ton of dinks right now everywhere.. fun to catch a handful a day but would be even better if they would fatten up a little. Still, no complaints from me.. were catching fish and having a good time doing it.
and thanks Robert, hopefully more to come in the future.

I'm just waiting for the day Nate stops bringing that conventional stuff on board my boat - it's giving me a bad reputation. I gotta get me one of those carp T - shirts.

Good thing we fish during the week Capt... Cant be too embarrassed to be seen with me and my baitcasters when there's no one on the lake!
Also, just think.. were incognito if im casting conventional.. no one will ever know what were really up to on the flats.

You start throwing conventional tackle on the flats and I'm going to make you swim back to the marina.
