Everyone can suggest their preference but to really cover your needs, what do you fish for and what kind of water are you fishing?

Mostly lakes and rivers. Catfish mainly with some sandbads thrown in the mix. The opportunity presented itself for 50 bucks along with some other gear. I know the adage is you get what you pay for but what I've seen it is very basic but better than nothing.

I'd agree with your statement (something is better than nothing).. I've owned a number of graphs and even inexpensive grayscale units provide some good info. I suggest you look at the current sales tho to see if a newer unit with better features may be within your financial comfort zone. Lots of new units coming so you may find a great deal floating around..

Anyway, there's nothing wrong with a $50 graph either if it works and has everything with it. Even if you sell it for $25 next year when you want to upgrade, the cost of ownership is very low.

Thanks Hanks and Bert I appreciate your input I really do as I am very novice in this subject. What are some things I should check? It is a local seller but unfortunately that doesn't mean much anymore. Really all I'm looking for in a unit this cheap is something to tell me depth I wouldn't even care if it shows me fish. I've never really even seen a transducer besides obvious wear and tear anything I should look out for?

I would look at some of the color units, when you are fishing for catfish in a river it is hard to see them as they hug the bottom. With color in a standard graph red = air( or something dense enough sound cannot penetrate it) so you can see their air bladders and know the fish are in the area. Then it all gets in to the 2d vs 3d etc, color is the best way to actually know what the graph is telling you IMO. The rest is all personal preference and refining approach.

GPS and mapping are nice too, makes it easier for you to find and mark structure that can hold fish and reduces the time searching.

I am not a very tecy kind of guy. I have had three fishfinders in my life. The hb 150, Lawrence elite 4x and the hb 597 hd ci di. I did like the maps but the rest did nothing for me. Imo...if you get a ff get one with maps. Cause without that you are only looking at a tiny bit of water. I dont use a ff now but also imo catching fish starts with paying attention to small details that the ff cant show.

I have the Elite 5 HDI on mine and it works great.

anyone have any experience of the Lowrance� Elite-3X DSI Sonar, its more in my price range.

I have the lowrance elite 5 and I love it. Prior to this I had the lowrance elite 4 and it worked very well.

The Lowrance� Elite-3X DSI Sonar looks great I love the down image I think its what I need to find structure and it has a sonar that can be fitted into the scupper drain . The only problem is I have read some bad review for it on the Bass Pro page but I don't think I have seen one that is affordable and has a perfect review . If anyone has I would love to hear about it . looking for something in the $300.00 and down range. Adam sorry for kidnapping your post.

I have a 25 year old basic humminbird unit. It basically gives me depth. I don't really use them to look for fish, so much as underwater cover and depth.

I just put my first garmin on my fish n dive. Like it so far.

Lowrance elite 4x HDI on my 115x. It is perfect for my needs. I can easily mark bait, structure, and active gamefish.

I use the navionics app on my iphone for maps. Best $10 I ever spent.

I have Hummingbird Helix5SI great unit for a kayak. not huge 5" screen all the options you want for $500. The base Model Helix also a good unit 2D sonar and Mapping. It goes for $250.
