Does anyone know what would cause a bass to have spots like this?

Every bass that I've caught with black spots have always appeared healthy. I used to think it happens more during the spawn, but I've been seeing fish like that well past then.

You know what's weird - I lived in west Texas until I was 25, fishing all of the west Texas lakes. I had caught maybe 3 or 4 bass with the black spots on them in my entire life.
I move out here to DFW. . .I catch a few every week it seems like. And I agree, the ones I catch with dark spots area always well fed and healthy looking.

seems like you see it a lot during transition phases. often when fish first move up for prespawn in the early spring for example.

I wore that hat just being silly one day while fishin, and I just so happened to catch my only DD with it on. From that point on it has been referred to as my lucky fishin hat, make fun if you want but I still believe in it

Not making fun at all. I've seen you wearing it several times now. Figured there had to be a story there. I had the same thing all over this fish I caught at Fork Wyatt, there has got to be a story behind that hat.....
