Jalopnik VW is about to kill the mileage and power of your engine after widespread emissions cheating has been found. Do not take it in to the stealership for the recall.

We have a 2013. Been happy with it,it has only 17,000 miles. The thing that pisses me off is they say it puts out over the normal excepted amount of exhaust pollution for the new diesel laws in effect. I don't see them taking every diesel truck or pick up off the road because it still puts out over unacceptable levels, lke my 02 dodge cummins. Then we let NAFTA trucks run up and down the roads smoking like freight trains or how about some school buses. They force that bull $h!t down our throats but no other country does this carbon pollution [censored] because they don't care. We are the only country and we are not going to make a difference in so called global warming if we all don't do it. They cant govrn but they hand down fines to the auto company's like crazy. Then let GM off the hook over law suites for using faulty ignition because they filed bankruptcy and some legal back log mumbo jumbo [censored] but hey...the government got there fine from a company the government owns. So now the say there thinking about not letting people get the tags for there cars unless they can prove they updated. Whats next you going to tell me where to [censored]. Texas don't even do diesel emissions testing so how they going to look at it? Elephants & Asses...All Screwing The Masses.

I think it will mean a little less hp and mpg will suffer. It should not be a huge power loss though.
From reading the Dieselgate thread on Fred's forum it looks a little like the main function of the program was to lower the amount of DEF used under normal conditions. I would think you may have to endure a 10 percent or so loss of power and mileage but I would not expect it to be worse than that.

Also, from what I've read, if you can find a way to defeat the steering wheel sensor, one that sees movement in the steering wheel, you can see what its like when its running legally. One engineer determined the programming sensed the steering wheel movement to determine when it was under test conditions.

Right. Back before the new law went into place all my cars were 12.50 to get inspected and there were no emissions testing.
There are only 9 states that test diesel cars and most of them only do visual testing to make sure the emissions equipment is installed and opacity (smoke) testing.

I wish all the emission control crowd would go to the middle east and see their policies. After being to both Iraq and Afghanistan and seeing what and how much stuff they burn everyday. If it's igniteable they burn it for heating, cooking whatever not to mention the lack of plumbing with "sewer deposits" dumping straight into the streets, rivers wherever it goes they don't care.
