So im taking a week to Bolivar/ Crystal beach area in mid to late September and want to do some surf fishing. I live in mid Missouri now so Im used to freshwater fishing. What fish and methods should I consider when I make the trip? Looking for keep it on the surf, not from a boat. Any info on what to look for, what fish I can expect and methods that are effective. We could reply enough times to fill a book and you would still not know half of what you need to. The above link is an awesome reference. it goes through everything you should need to get started by subject. September is going to be big redfish time for sure but there will be all kinds of fish in the surf at that time. There's almost no telling what all you could catch. Depends on how heavy you want to go as well. You can use freshwater type gear for reds and trout in the surf that time of year. Even catch bull reds on musky and pike type equipment.

For bull reds fish closer to passes and jetty cuts. Cracked crab with circle hook or cut mullet with circle hook. cant be beat.

For trout look for active bait concentrations in the first or second gut in the same areas and use anything that would catch a bass as long as it walks the dog... like a bone zara spook.

Good fishing there wife and I have bull reds to 42" there.

when i fish the surf down at bolivar, typically i look for a few days of consistent south /south east wind to bring in the nice water and then you want a light north wind or no wind one morning and you have yourself a gorgeous day in the surf. on a day like that you can expect to catch trout and red fish. I always throw top waters.. zara spooks and rapala skitterwalks.. look for slicks popping up and also look for any bait busting
