There is obviously a shortage of good service technicians and good service shops. If I were a young man looking to get training for a productive career, I would look into a marine technician job! After working for someone a few years, you could then open your own shop!
I called around recently and the backlog was weeks at most all I called.

The second shop I took my boat to this morning called this afternoon. They already pulled my boat in and looked it over to see what I need. They called me to okay the repairs so they can order parts. I'm glad I didn't leave it at the place that was going to stick it in a field for 3-4 weeks before even looking at it.
I've found my new repair shop and they've found a new customer.

I have always had great service from Service Marine in Emory. I think that Chuck does have a system for scheduling his work, and will put you on a list and call you when you can bring your boat in and he can do the work on your boat. They have always done the work on my boat in a timely manner or when they said they would.

On top of that, I have heard story after story from dependable sources about how they decide which boats get worked on first. If you pull in with a problem and you are one of their buddies, they send 2-3 guys out into the parking lot like a NASCAR pit crew to fix it. If you'renot one of the boys, your boat goes to the lot out back where it sits until they get around to wanting to fix it.
I can guarantee that is NOT the way Rockwall Marine does business. My first time ever in the shop was with my crappy Xpress that I bought from an individual and Tommy made me feel like I was the most important person at the shop. They got me squared away and took care of me beyond my expectations. This is why they are the only people that work on my boats. Give them a call and schedule your work.

Only one guy touches my boat.....he does it at home in his shop, and I get it in a day or two every time..... He's a great tech and a great guy.....plus he's in his early 40's so I'll die before he quits

I don't mind the wait on repair but allow me to schedule to bring the boat in so that it's not sitting outside on the lot. I have talked with mechanics about this before and the mindset of the owners is that's money that is sitting out there.
Also as customers we should give the same courtesy and call if we are not going to bring the boat in or decided on a different avenue.
Also last if I was a service / repair shop I would offer my customers various shipping prices on parts that may take longer to get due to regular shipping is the norm for doing business.
Also offer mechanics overtime and allow customers to choose if they want to pay that overtime charge to get things expedited. It maybe could work... I don't know but I cannot stand a boat sitting out in the weather on a lot.
For Yamaha service I have had good luck with Jorgensen Marine in Beaumont.

That was an added incentive for me. That's all fine and dandy, but what happens when you need something that's not in stock and on national back order? Will they pull it off another boat to get you going? I mean you did pay for a new one it sounds like. Why is that no dealers are not chiming in about this? Tell us why we can or can't schedule a drop off time? I know it doesn't take a real long time to hook up a computer and provide an estimate or a schedule of repairs if under warranty. Maybe some do? Maybe it is for certain brands that they can only do this for due to availability of parts? I had a boat sit for 3.5 months for an issue and it took a bunch of unnecessary bs to get it resolved when they could have addressed it sooner. Obviously if you're dead in the water then you got wait.

Some good ideas here, and some land mines. But I like your direction! One thing, I understand about a desire to have a steady stream of work. Part of that is having a backlog of boats. I would offer some other service in the down-time created by not having the next 'scheduled' boat ready to go at a moment's notice...

By all means it pays to take care of repeat customers but at the same time its a slippery slope that might cost you some sales from customers that were treated well by service and then decided to check out the sales side of the business. I bet its afine line on doing that.
