OK, this is a follow-up to the conversation we had about worms last week. I told you I bought a 50 pack of Super Worms to try. Got them at Petsmart store. Fished this morning in a local lake with my buddy in his boat. We happened up on a lake point that had a bunch of large bluegills. To be more accurate, they were red ears, or she'll crackers if you prefer, and long ears, with a few blue gills and red breast mixed in. I caught four or five in other locations, but caught most of my fish on that point. Was using a drop shot rig, which works best on this lake due to "crud" right on bottom that will cover and fowl up the bait if it is on the bottom. I brought 18 fish home to fillet and put in the freezer for a couple of future dinners, up to 10" in length. The fish took the super worms well, so I would give them a thumbs up. After a worm got mauled by a bream, I would add a fresh worm in front of it, to have enough on the hook.

When I bought these worms several days ago, I discarded the bedding they came in and replaced it with oatmill. I placed several slices off of a carrot on top for moisture and food. They ate those carrots in no time and I added more. I read where you can feed them like this and keep them fresh and healthy for months. Peelings from fruits and vegetables will work. They don't need to be in the fridge, just keep them in the house on a shelf. They do well in warm weather. I brought the ones home that I didn't use this morning, put a few new slices of carrots on top, and will use them next trip.

You may recall the reason I wanted to experiment with these worms was because the dirt that night crawlers come in is mostly black worm poop that sticks to my hands, I.e. Is dirty stuff, and also because the night crawlers get limp in warm/hot water. I guess I believe a night crawler can't be beat when it is not so hot, but you have to keep them on ice in this hot summer temperature. I'm thinking that in the future when I use night crawlers, I'll throw away the crud they come in first thing and replace it with a cleaner bedding. Don't now why oatmill wouldn't work for them like it does for the super worms. What I will probably do is use super worms in the hot months of summer and night crawlers the rest of the year. How much are these Super Wirms at Petsmart?

A carton of DMF's night crawlers cost about $3.49 at Acadamey. I usually get mine at a Shell Station by Lake Dunlap for a little more but I like the management there. Great Customer Service. I also use the magic bait brand night crawlers as well. I keep them in my refrigerator and have had some last a month without doing a thing to them. All I do is grab a carton of worms and start fishing.

WC, I don't remember exactly, but the cost was between 5 and 6 dollars. I called them to ask about the price before going to get them.

Fish - I use almost exclusively the large meal worms. I get 500-1000 and they last for several months in the refrigerator as long as they are in some type of bedding (oat bran, etc). They are clean and mess-free. I usually put 2 on a long shank cricket hook and wipe up on the gills and redears. I've probably taken 300+ redears and blue gills in two trips in the past month on them. I grew up fishing crickets but they are a pain to deal with and short-lived. I've also caught 3 bass up to 18" and catfish on drop shots with meal worms as a bonus. I order from Armstrong too. You can see my post on Fayette County as proof.
