The only time I have thrown a c-rig was with a guide on Fork many years ago. Since I've been fishing for at least 5 years now, it's time I start using this technique to help catch more fish.
I have several of the pre-made c-rig set ups that I got at BPS. What are opinions of using these, versus doing the brass pieces, glass beads, etc. to build your own set up?
Also, what kind of knot would I use to tie on to either end of the pre-made set up? I'm typically just a Palomar knot guy, so need to understand how to tie the c-rig deal on.
Thanks in advance,
Jim

I do my own. It takes no longer than tying a Texas rig. I have beads, clackers and swivels in their own compartment next to hooks and weights. Knot depends on that you like. I use braid to mono so usually a pall at with the braid and a trilene or improved clinch with mono.Weight, bead, clacker, swivel, leader and hook.

If the weight doesn't move up and down the line freely it isn't right. Tie your own.

Tie your own. IMO, the pre-made ones look cheaply constructed, more likely to snag and inhibits movement. Try using Carolina Keepers if you don't want to go with the weight, bead, Palomar knot, swivel, Palomar knot, leader, Palomar knot to hook. Instead it would look like weight, 1 or 2 Carolina Keeper (depending on size weight) and one Palomar knot to hook. The good thing is it only costs $2. http://www.academy.com/shop/browse/SearchDisplay?searchTerm=Carolina+keeper

I've also had less problems with break offs. The only downside you can't use different line weights on leader.

Then it's impossible I guess. Take it literal if you want. I was simply implying it doesn't take long to tie a Carolina rig. Much less justify using the goofy pre made rigs. Knots take no time to tie. You're still using weight, hook, and line.

I tie my own. Easy knots to use would be a Palomar, San Diego Jam or the Fishin fool knot.

Palomar is kind of a pain doing leader first and impossible otherwise. I would always tie up a bunch of just the leaders to be ready on the water just single knot. keeper still blows that technique away though.

Use this set up: barrel weight, steel clacker disk, glass bead then add 2 Carolina keepers, then tie tag line directly to hook. Now you have an adjustable c-rig. Go from 2 foot leader to 3 foot without having to retie. Works great!

I usually use the keepers too. If you use them, make sure to check your line periodically, especially if you've pulled the rig through any timber. If the weight gets caught up on something, and you're able to pull it off, sometimes the keepers will slide up the line a bit (and yes, I usually use two), and knick your line.
