When I use a chatterbait, I like to use a fluke as the tail instead of the small tail it comes with. Problem is that after 6-7 casts, the fluke wont stay up on the hook and slides down every time. It's a hassle to have to fix it after every cast. Is there a way to get the fluke to stay in place? I'm assuming I could put superglue on the base of the chatterbait but then I'd never get it off to change colors of flukes I use as a trailer.

Super glue and changing trailers is no problem.

i've been thinking about this also. I was thinking about a piece of rubber like you use for a trailer hook on a spinner bait. what i have been doing is putting a dab of silicone....yeah i know....right after the bend on my hook. works but you have to go through and do it before you're on the water.

If it's a chatterbait that does not have a hook keeper, try a very small tie wrap. Glue or epoxy in place on the hook. The tie wrap has a small enough hump to help keep the bait in place much better.

Here are the things you need to do.
1. throw all the trailers away and get you a Lake Fork Magic shad in 3 or 4"
2. go to Autozone or somewhere like that and buy some small heat shrink tubing
get it just big enough to go over the hook
3. cut you a piece about a 1/2" or so long at a 45 deg. on one end
4. slip the piece over the hook with the 45 toward the front
5. as you heat the heat shrink pull the point up on the heat shrink

that way when you slide the trailer over the hook and the heat shrink, where you
pulled up the tip will bite into the trailer. Keeping it from sliding down

Keep it simple, superglue! I prefer gel. Easy to remove the bait & change. Try not to over think things...

For chatterbaits that don't have a trailer keeper on them, I take either a piece of wire or straight piece of paperclip about 3/4 of an inch, bend one end into a "V" like other wire keepers and then wrap it on the hook shank with braid and a drop of glue. Its not perfect and will tear up a trailer if you change colors a lot, but it does hold it on the bait really well if you are fishing heavy grass and getting your trailer fouled a lot.

Get the Project Z chatter bait. They have a keeper on them.

I use the ZMan Elite Chatterbaits. I've not had a problem with them and using a 4" LF Live Magic Shad. Like others have said, to have a little bit of insurance, put a dab of superglue right under where the skirt meets the head, and push your trailer on. Within a few seconds, it will be secured and you can chunk it all day long.
