Heading up to Pagosa Springs on Saturday with the family. I plan on brining my kayak, so I can get out on some of the small lakes up there (echo, Williams creek, etc). We also plan on making a trip down below the Navajo Dam and fishing the quality waters. Anyone have any tips on other places we should check out in the area? I typically only fish the San Juan through the city, so will be new to fly fishing from a yak in the lake.

For great action in still waters up there make Certain that you have plenty of olive damsel Nymphs. Sight cast or blind casting a slow strip they can't stand them. If they are in a really feisty mood you can't go too fast. Also cronomids with white bead head sz 16-18. Hope y'all have a great trip. Look forward to the report. How long are y'all staying?

Look back to the end of page 2 or page 3 of the threads here for information on the Durango area there are also a lot of other suggestions for that area there to. With 10 days you will have plenty of time to hit some of those as well.

I saw pics on Google maps of small boat below the dam. Any idea if you can put a yak in there? I'm hauling mine up with me, but wasn't planning on bringing it to the dam.

I would think if the flow is not crazy you should be fine with the yak behind the dam. Be ready to think small there in terms of flys especially be closer to the dam you get.

Make sure you tie good knots below the dam...

With a Kayak at the quality waters you will be about to load in where the drift boats do and paddle a little ways upriver to the Texas Hole. Fish the seams of the main current, towards the top of the hole is better. You cant miss it, others will be doing the same but you are able to get a bit further out being in the kayak. We always have luck with red midge larva and black midge larva some with flash and without. Also chocolate foam wings seems to do well in Texas Hole. If you can go on a weekday I suggest that, will be much less crowded. San Juan quality waters are a fun place with huge fish. We normally wade fish the braids all the way up to upper flats and cable hole. The guys at Abes will help you with flies. Size 22-26 normally. Hope this helps.
