The wife and i are kayaking the hill country this week but next weekend we are taking the fam to the coast and i want to try my hand at redfishing. Being primarily a LMB fisher i think my skills should translate pretty well but i am clueless when it comes to baits and habitat. We will be staying on the beach nar Port A but less than a mile away from the shamrock cove are. I appreciate any tips.

Haven't fished Shamrock. If you cross the ferry , you will have B&R on your left, and Light house Lakes on your right. Lots of good fishing on either side of the causeway. Your LMB equipment will work just fine. I prefer 1/16 or 1/8 oz. o jig heads. (I use only artificial) they will also work with a popping cork using plastic or shrimp. Good luck.

Just as B737 said, you should take a ride on the ferry over to Aransas Pass and fish the lighthouse lakes and B&R flats. Reds should be cruising the flats and marshes looking for mullet, crabs and shrimp, so my favorite lures for there are Zara Spook Jr (color: bone white), 1/16 jig head with Saltwater Assassin (color: chicken on a chain) and then a DOA glow shrimp under a popping cork. You should be able to find some decent fish, just make sure you watch those tides and done get stuck in the lighthouse lakes.
Hope this helps -Moondog

I fish there a couple times a year, this will my first kayak trip. i'm going to hit it out of Wilsons cut & light house. Prob Packery flats also. I look at it like this, I'll have a rod rigged with a popping cork and khale hook for shrimp, a spinning rod with a 1/8 or 1/4 oz jig head for either plastic or a shrimp for sight casting, a rod for free lining a mullet or piggie perch, a rod rigged with a slip sinker rig for cut or live mullet, a rod rigged with a 1/8 or 1/16oz jig head with a plastic or if its grassy a weedless weighted, and a rod rigged for plugs mainly top water. That about covers it for me.

In the past I've had good luck on lead head jigs rigged with Gulp Shrimp. Of course I had to put up with the occasional flounder and trout catches as well.
