I'm a once a year guy. I suspect we will purchase a few live shrimp and frozen squid. Obviously I'd like to catch trout and redfish, but if we can convince a few fish of basically any species to bite, the boys will be happy. Please share your knowledge now.

There's a jetty on both the north and south end as well the middle of Mustang Island. For reds/trout live shrimp is better than squid especially if fishing the jetties. Most basic fishing is probably the piers at night w/squid or cutbait for Gaffies/other fish or fishing surf with fresh dead shrimp or Fishbites for Whiting & other species, if the surf is not too rough. Trout/reds are gonna take a bit more preparation/specialization for constitant catches, but lots of it depends on the water conditions and locations you fish. Suggest you do a search on here looking for posts answering or commenting on your questions. Key words like trout, redfish, port Aransas, jetties should give you some results and after reading up, come up with a game plan of possible action, post it and let folks suggest changes/fine tune or agree with your plan. That'll be the best way to get some serious input. Good Luck

Please forgive my knowledge of the area. I was looking at Mustang State Park, near fish pass? The map looked to show 2 jetties. I would be going to the easiest one to access with a vehicle. The boys and I are quite proficient with grubs/swimbait fishing and we've used fish bites before as well. We can use speck rigs and Carolina rigs also. We will show up with a couple dozed live shrimp.

I fish those jetties all the time. Live shrimp under a popping cork will work well for trout about half way out on the jetty, as well as plastic shrimp tails on jig heads bounced off the bottom. My favorite go to lure, a Johnson Sprite silver spoon can be very effective as well. If the Jack Crevalle are in there, look out. I caught one a couple weeks ago on the north side jetty on a silver spoon that took 30 minutes to land. Live finger mullet or fresh cut mullet or cut skipjack fished off the end of the jetty work very well for big redfish and pup sharks. Fish Bites work well for catching whiting in the shallower water where the surf breaks.

I think he means Packery Channel Jetties. No, he actually means the Fish Pass jetties. He mentioned the jetties at Mustang Island State Park. There are two jetties that used to protect the opening to the old Fish Pass channel that has since filled in with sand. I fish both Packery and Fish Pass, and know them both well. In fact, I fished the Fish Pass N Jetty on Friday and landed the largest trout I have ever caught of 29 inches and 8.5 lbs on a live 4" pinfish. It is a good place to fish, but it can get very crowded because they do not extend very far into the surf. The rocks are harder to negotiate than Packery, which has a nice walkway and railings, and they extend out much farther.

We are headed down to Port Aransas next week and was wondering if the fishing around the jetties on Mustang Island is better than the jetties at Port A?
Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin Probably too late to answer you, but for anyone else wondering. All offer excellent fishing on a given day and under certain conditions. The PA jetties are far longer, and offer a very deep water channel on one side and a greater range of surf and depth on the other side than the Fish Pass or Packery Jetties do.
