Is it worth spending $250 + on a frog rod? I understand spending enough to buy from a quality brand, but not in the $200-250 or more. It's a visual technique and does not require sensitivity, so why the big bucks. Outside of being on the heavy size and requiring strength.

Because if you buy the right rod it can be used for multiple presentations besides just frog fishing.

Also the quality of guides, balance of rod with reel, and physical weight of rod. As Mark said, it can be used for different techniques as well.

I paid $30 for my frog rod and I love it. Its a 7'6" BPS Graphite Series Heavy Action. They are usually $40 but it was on sale. Its got a solid, heavy backbone. I liked it so much I bought another one that I use for jigs and c-rigs

Strength, weight, good guides and the right tip. I've seen a ton of guys blow up cheap rods setting the hook with 65lb braid. You need a strong blank that can handle repeated heavy hooksets with heavy line. Also, I will throw a frog for an entire day sometimes. I want something lightweight that I can fish with all day and has the proper tip to give the frog the right action. Heavy braid will ruin crappy guides pretty quickly.

And as indicated, a good frog rod can double up as a jig rod.

My frog rod is the cheapest rod I own. It's an old Castaway broomstick. If you're buying a rod JUST for frog fishing, I don't see any reason to spend big money. It doesn't need to be sensitive because you see the strikes, it just needs to be stout. A more expensive rod will be lighter and better balanced tho, keep that in mind.

I use a Cara Amistad for a frog rod. I also use it for big jigs, C-rigging and flipping thick stuff and fishing lakes like Falcon. That's why I own 3 of them. Very light and sensitive...and yes, it costs $240, unfortunately.

i agree its a visual technique, i go for the lightest heavy action rod, right now my frog rod is a 715 phenix recon 2 love it fishing sparse grass, also my jig rod.... 189.99 my slop frog rod is a 7'11 phenix maxim heavy 129.99.... technology is getting better and quality of rods for the price have gone way up, my days of buying 250-300$ rods is over....

Oh my! Don't ask me what my frog rod costs. Or the reel on it! Haha. It's the single most expensive, least used, combo in my rod box. But the rod and reel cosmetically match perfectly. And the extra heavy rod and reel, spooled with 55lb braid, weighs less than 10 ounces and has a lifetime warranty when used with 55-80lb braid. Can't say that for any other rod. The other rods are not warrantied when used with really strong line. This actually says"braided line special" right on the air beam seat.

To answer your question... Yes. ...and no.

It's worth it to buy the best, once. Then after you realize the deminishing returns for the extra money spent, you'll decide that it isn't. Not for a rod that is so highly specialized for one specific application. And it's a technique (pattern) that is short lived each year. At least for me and my fishing. I'd rather have two more Cara Amistads for what I paid for the Steez Frog rod. And I'd also rather have two more Lews Team Lews Pro reels instead of the Steez reel on the frog rod. I could use the Lews/Falcon combos a lot more. Maybe I'll make someone a good deal on a very lightly used Steez Combo. Lol.

I agree , I buy rods for the techniques I use the most to double as my frog rod not vice versa

What I've learned about rods in general that the mid range cost rods ($200-300) you are paying for more than just sensitivity. If you throw a frog a lot, you will want a good rod. The weight, balance, guides, accuracy, just the right amount of tip, comfort, grip, how it fits with the right reel, etc.. I'm not saying you can't find a less expensive rods that can give you all those things, I just haven't found a cheap one.

People talk about how cranking all day can wear you out and it can, throwing a frog all day wears me out too. I'm still looking for the perfect frog rod by the way, the closest thing I have to perfect is the Megabass Perfect Pitch rod, but it's just a little too heavy sometimes I think.
