I hate to look like I'm just plugging a sponsor, but I would highly suggest you check out NuJigs. Weed guard won't interfere with the hook set but also keeps you from hanging up. We use a double prong guard instead of those awful bristles and not to mention a quality hook. Best jigs I have ever used, hands down. That's my personal opinion, not just trying to promote them. Best of luck to ya

Best of luck to ya This jig will also do one other thing, because the weed Guard uses the double prong that uses some tension. The weed guard will put pressure on the inside of the fishes mouth because of the tension when the fish bites down or when you set the hook so it is harder to throw the jig out of his mouth. this is one of the best jigs in timber for not hanging up and I love the Trokar hooks in them.

Given that the fish is coming off exactly when you are swinging it into the boat and that they end up on the carpet makes me think that your rod is too stiff. As mentioned earlier, having some give in the tip allows for the rod to flex with the weight of the fish which keeps the hook in contact with the skin around the hole that the hook has created.
I would try a medium heavy rod before I switched line or jig brand.

I would not trim the weed guard back as it makes it shorter and more stiff, which makes it harder get it the hook point in the fish. I have made this mistake and learned from it.
Take some pliers and remove 3-6 strands In the center of weedguard by pulling them straight out.
Work the weedguard by pressing it up and down and get rid of any paint at the bottom of the weedguard. Sometimes they dip these jigs and the paint is holding the weedguard stiff at the bottom.
Then take your fingers and spread the weedguard out.

I used to have that problem as well. Id lose probably 25% of the jig fish I hooked to a head shake, or something else during the fight. I started using these and I stopped losing fish. That deep throat hook gets em in the top of the mouth 90% of the time, and I have to pop it out with the heel of my hand. I cant remember losing a fish on these jigs. I started fishing them exclusively over a year ago. You can find them here http://siebertoutdoors.com/Dredge-Brush-Mata-443.htm . Theyre a really great product at a decent price, and Mike Siebert is a really nice, easy guy to deal with. I have no affiliation with him, just like the stuff he makes. I do trim the weed guard back to the top of the hook bend, at an angle that makes it longer towards the hook. Good Luck!

I don't ever mess with the weed guards anymore, just get hung up more. http://www.bassmaster.com/blog/hackney-selecting-proper-jig-part-1Go though this series of articles and his one about jigs, t-rigs and I THINK he talks about hookset... If I remember right https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HLXVfo4YSMwatch the zin master man... learn, and LAUGH! To me it sounds like your tearing a hole in their mouth, happens a lot... Once you pop them good are you setting the hook any more? It isn't the jig, that jig is great... Its in the way your fighting the fish another thing, I think if you get a rod with a little tip it helps a TON! If somebody would make me a 7'6' Heavy action Moderate fast, I think that would be the perfect flipping stick. You want the rod to load a little, you'll lose way less and easier to cast ps... it drives me nuts when people say, "try this jig it always gets them in the top of the mouth." that iss bs, the jig shape does HELP with getting it into the top of the fishes mouth that and the way the hook is shape/curved. But 90% of it is the way the fish eats the bait. Did he suck it up, did he grab the pincher and then suck in only the back, did he grab it head on? the best jig imo would het the hook solid in the fish no matter HOW the fish eats it.. Not trying to start an argument but I could not disagree with you more, I have nothing to do with Nu Tech jigs but I can tell you over 90 % of the fish I have stuck with this jig has been in the roof of the mouth, I think it has something to do with the double weed guards, really don't care if you buy into it or not, it is the only jig that I use.

Look how Hackney explains a hook set. No need to take their head off like that probable cause a huge hole in their mouths by doing so and causing issues.

so i really dialed in on a Black and Blue Jig bite while night fishing right now. I Using Hack attack jigs by strike king. we are talking 10-20 fish a night. this is my first year using Big Jigs like this. I using 7'6 heavy action Rod and 25lb Copolymer. I feel the bite. reel in my slack. MAKE SURE i feel the Weight of the Fish on my Rod and Then I try and Break the Rod with the hook set. I Mean theres no way you can set the hook any harder. I fight the fish. reeling him in as fast as possible. not giving him a chance to fight. and try and swing him in the boat, only for the fish to Come off while swinging him in the boat. I even smacked The wife in the Face with a 3 pounder trying to swing a fish in the boat. I HAVE EVEN LET THE FISH RUN WITH THE JIG FOR 3-4 SECONDS BEFORE I DO THE WORLDS HARDEST HOOK-SET. Still half the time it will come off while trying to land the fish. i even tried Just LEANING IN TO THE FISH! still the same thing happens and sometimes when i do swing the fish in the boat the jig will pop out and leave the fish flopping all over my carpet. I doing something wrong. please help. Thanks in advance! sorry for any Misspelling I m in a hurry. I fish with a jig a bunch. Here's what I have learned: Constant tension is more important than a hard explosive hook set. Guys think it's a competition to see who can set the hook the hardest. It is silly and a great way to loose fish. When Jig fishing.... Don't ever drop your rod tip and then use an explosive hook set. What you need to do is reel into the fish until you feel pressure start. The sweep the rod back and lean into them. You will land almost every bass that bites it;) I also recommend listening to Mark Pack....He is one of the best Jig Fishermen in the country.
