ok just wondering to all you Drop Shot guys that do it a lot >30% of the time. I know you can drop shot at any depth, but my question is and I know it can vary, but what is the optimum depth or best depth you guys have success at. fished it a little bit this weekend and wanting to add this to my arsenal . and what lure do you favor using. Thanks for all responses May your next bass be your new personal best! Jeff

This is probably not the answer you are looking for but I fish it from 10-30 feet and I can't say I have had one depth work better than another. I use electronics to locate the depth the fish are at and that is the depth I fish. My main go to for bait is the Zoom Z drop worm or a trick worm but I think that is just a confidence thing. Hope this helps

I have used it almost exclusively the last few times out at Wheeler Branch where the fishing has been tougher as of late. I want to learn the ins and outs of the drop shot.
At least on that lake, the fish have seemingly moved out of the shallows and into 15 to 20' of water on points with vegetation and structure.
Of the various plastic worms I have used, I strongly prefer the Roboworm straight tail. I have been using the 6" but I have the shorter 4.5" and need to try these shorter worms out. Something makes me think they'd work even better hooking up the fish. Phototex gave me some interesting shad looking plastics and I think something shad-like and small would be good, too.
Regarding the worm, I think slim is good here for better action in the water.
KVD and Martens have both recommended nose hooking your bait sort of "up through the chin but not so that the hook point actually breaks through the plastic at the nose, but just below still in the plastic. It is fairly weedless this way. If the fish grabs or inhales the worm, just a soft reel set should expose the hook and bury it in the fish's mouth.
To be fair, I am still missing about 1 out of 3 hook ups, so I need more time to work this out.
I have my hook set up a bit over 1 ft above the sinker but I'd leave a longer tag line on (if it is fluoro, the fish won't see it down there anyway) then slip the sinker lower or higher if you feel you need to change the depth you are fishing off the bottom.
1/0 has been my hook of choice: 12 pounds Nanofil to 8 pounds Seagur Fluorocarbon for my line.
If you are fishing from a boat and dropping your drop shot vertically, be sure and stop and wiggle a bit as you bring the rig up. They may be suspended higher, or looking up, so reel it in slowly and you might have a surprise.
This is all I know, so far, about the drop shot. A fun way to fish, for sure.
Brad

Any depth. I even toss it into Lilly pads. Lol. Like punching. But not. I see a opening, I toss it in. Sometimes it never comes back.

I drop shot or bubba shot almost as much as I T rig and in the same places ....depth is not my first consideration and does not determine when I use it.....I do throw exclusively offset owner 1/0 or 2/0 hooks....10 to 14 lb sniper fluoro with zoom trick worms or roboworms.....hook up is near 100%....top of the mouth and stuck!!

I personally use drop shot in just about any depth more than 6ft. Just depends on what type of water you are fishing. Many guys fish beds with drop shot in 2ft!!!
I also don't like to use a spin cast reel. I prefer baitcaster. Typically use 8lb braid and 6lb flouro leader. With 6in worms I like a 1/0 hook and hooked like a T-rig....with the 4" worms I nose hook it and use a drop shot owner hook. Favorite worms are Robo Worms in Aaron's Magic and Zoom trick worm in tomato and green pumpkin. More bites come when you are doing absolutely NOTHING but sitting there....stay patient and good luck.

Good point about the doing nothing. I was among the misinformed in the beginning that thought you had to be constantly shaking it. The current and action of the worm is plenty.

Im no expert at the drop shot, but last week on Table Rock I had to use it and I normally hate fishing with light tackle. But when you see fish on your graph and watch that rig going down on your electronics right in front of them and then feel that strike its awesome!
