Can some one please tell me the easiest way to get the shift linkage loose on a 96 115 johnson. The only what I see to get to it the bolt holding it would be to take the bottom carb off. Hopefully one of ya'll have had experiance with this. Thanks for your help.

I had a 94 115. The pin holding the shift linkage was accessable by using forceps or long needle nose pliers. Wasn't hard removing, but harder when you were going back together.
I never had to remove the carbs.
I don't know if this is when they changed designs. Check this link out and ask your question.

if it's like my old 150 you should be able to reach it with a socket, wobble an extention.back it out just far enough for the shift rod to come loose.
Start early, stay late and keep your plug in the water.

A 1996 115HP will have shift linkage that is held in place by a clip (hairpin type) you will have to remove from the starboard side of the engine, once you remove this clip the shaft will slide back enough for you to release the shift rod and remove the gearcase.

here is a look at V4 and V6's. I've never done a 115, but I know on some model's you need to remove the VRO pump ( I heard). not a carb... lower unit removal

Thanks for ya'lls help. Mine did just have the hairpin to remove then slide the linkage over. Took about 30 minutues total to do the whole thing. All is running good again with 9psi at idle.
