This is the best way I've found to do it. Have a cooler with ice water ready when throwing your net and put them in the ice water immediately. You want to get them cooled down fast. When your ready to package them pat each one dry with paper towels, making sure to wipe all the slime off. Sprinkle them with a little salt and place them one layer thick (don't just toss them in) in a vacuum sealer bag and vacuum seal them making sure to get ALL the air out. Then get them right to the freezer. When your ready to fish, just grab a bag with as many shad as you will need for the day, find the nearest trash can and throw them in the garbage. Then go catch some fresh shad. Seriously though. If you absolutely must use frozen shad, that is your best bet. I've tried several ways and this produces the best possible bait. Having said that, I will never use frozen shad again. If for some reason I can't catch shad, I'll catch perch with the cast net or rod and reel. If I can't catch shad or perch.... I'll go bass fishing

Getting them cold fast,layer of ice with salt then shad ice again, salt, then shad.If salt will feeze ice cream it will jump start the shad and will add a little toughness to them.

I once know a guy who bragged he had a way of freezing shad so that when unthawed, they returned to life. I don't know whatever happened to that ole boy. Someone said he went into politics.

Only freeze big ones. I wipe slime off of them and vacuum seal in ziploc vacuum bags.
