He likely didn't ask to see a fishing license because you aren't required to have one, not in a state park in Texas. But, as far as I know, all of the rules still apply.

I suppose a non-game warden officer, if he/she suspects something in a state park, could still approach a fisherman ostensibly to check on fishing compliance . . . and then use it to ask for other ID.

I find those published game warden notes very interesting, that they often catch criminals, it seems drug related offenders most often, doing just this sort of thing.

*** For any readers here, pick up and read in the order they were published, the series of novels by C.J. Box featuring a game warden working in Wyoming. Excellent.

Why would a police officer ask for your fishing license? Only reason I can think of would be to get revenue for the city where they work.

This should be left to the Game Warden........ They know the laws that pertain to fishing and hunting...

I disagree with the above comment. I for one like seeing them out there. It's true there aren't enough GM's out there. They could use all the extra help they can get. There are far too many people taking game illegaly. Keep up the good work!

Yes, most of us were just thinking how nice it would be if more cops interrupted our fishing to demand identification without suspicion of a crime.

From what I have seen they don't know the laws that apply to fisherman. So they need to stick with they know. Just like you don't see your local game warden sitting in a school zone with a radar gun looking for speeders...

One reason you don't see more GW's in the field is they are being sent to the Rio Grande to catch wetbacks. I talked to one about a week ago and he had just got back from spending several days down there.

I think that term's okay. When I lived in Michigan we had huge swarms of Canadians swimming across the Detroit river to enter the US illegally. We called them coldbacks.

4hrs ago I made a case in which a male subject was asked for his fishing license while fishing the river in town. After a brief investigation it was determined he had an outstanding warrant for sexual assault of a child. What's disturbing about the case was that the part of the river he was "fishing" was 200 feet from the kids playground. I tell you this because even though I am not fluent in wildlife code I know enough to interrupt the criminal enterprise and also carry on a meaningful conversation with law abiding folk. And to address the issue of "revenue for the city", the State of Texas gets most of the revenue generated from citations. If the violation happens to be a city ordinance then the municipality gets the revenue. And last time I checked, not having a fishing license is a state offense. I'm not here to harrass the law abiding folks. My main purpose is to protect our community from the criminal element. Just FYI sir.

Why a 45? Cuz they don't make a 46

People do not understand law enforcements purpose for simply asking for an ID. There are bad people all over and what's seems a simple "day in the park" leads to big things at times.

When asked by a LEO, I really do not care if he has "jurisdiction" or not, I will gladly comply with the request. Too many people these days are looking for a fight instead of doing what is right. If there is a problem with the officer, take it up later, not at the time. I feel if there is nothing to hide, one should gladly comply.
