OK, had the boat under a skeeter cover for the vast part of May, not under hard cover. When I pulled the cover off, I noticed some spots that had what looked cloudy or fogged up spot in the black portions of the coating. My question is, will this buff out or is it caused by all the rain? unfortunately I couldn't get it out of the rain. The inside of the boat stayed dry but the side rails were most likely moist for a while......the coating is still smooth and doesn't seem damaged? any help would be greatly appreciated!

not right now, im at work. they just look cloudy or kinda milky in a few spots and it wasn't that way when I put the cover on it before it started raining. ill try and get some pics in morning.

Try using a compound on the spots. It should buff out without a compound I would think, but if not try a light compound (by hand). And then a liquid wax to show her up (by hand).

I've heard (not tested) that a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser will work on fogging. May try it in a small spot.

More than likely the moisture pulled up some of the wax in the gel coat. Buffing will work for a period but it will come back. The best way to,fix the issue is to sand the affected area with 600 grit wet or dry sandpaper, then go over the 600 grit with 1000 grit wet or dry paper. Buff and then polish and the area will be completely refinished. I would use 3m compound and 3m Polish. You will need a yellow wool or foam pad and a black foam pad for the polish. Then it will be like new..

Its most likely caused by the cover rubbing the gel coat when the wind blows it. I keep mine in the garage but every now and then when its at the shop I keep it covered while there. Last time a big storm blew through with high winds and caused the clouding you mentioned where the cover contacted the gel coat. I haven't tried to remove it yet but I see no reason why it wont buff out.

DO NOT use a Mr. Clean Magic eraser, it will take the finish off of anything smooth, shiny or painted. You will create yourself more work.

Yes, I recently did my 2003 187. There is some great information over on the Bass restoration thread. The key is taking your time and using the right tools and equipment. Here is a great thread. I use the Protec products. Here is what I did, I used 1500 SP and then followed that up with 2000 SP. The key is to keep it paper wet and take your time. You will not be pleased if you dont take your time and go slow!! After you wet sand, wash the boat. Then buff with this 3M 06044 Imperial Compound and Finishing Material - 32 fl. oz. : Amazon.com : Automotive, keep using this until you dont see any small sctratches. Wash again. Then I buffed in the Nu Piant Moisturisure by Pro-Tec. Once this was done I washed it again and sealed it with two coats of the pro-tec selant. Here is a good thread on tools you will need. Do lots of reading before you get started.

Sealing it can simply be done with wax. Sandpaper grit can vary but anything 1000 or finer will buff with micro finishing compound. Polishing glaze will take out the small imperfections. I highly recommend wax vs other gadget sealants.

Thankyou for all the advise guys! i am going to start with the 3M compund first then if that doesnt do it, i will dig in and hit it with eth SP. Ill post some pics this weekend of before and after.
