Heya guys!

Super new to saltwater and wanted to know what type of line would work best for these three? My aunt has a private dock in Baytown, TX (Cedar Bayou Channel between Trinity Bay and Tabbs Bay ) and me and some buds are heading that way in a couple of weeks! I've heard 15 lb Power Bro braid line works well? I have spinning reels and we may end up on my uncle's boat as well! Pics attached to show location! Full of flounder, reds and specks--

Almost all of my saltwater fishing is done with 12 to 15 pound mono line. I use Trilene green big game simply because it seems to be pretty good and it is relatively inexpensive. Most of your fish will likely be under 5 pounds. If you do hook up with a bigger redfish or black drum, let the drag do it's thing. Good luck down there.

Thanks for the info, Curt-- I hear with popping corks, you want braid as main line, with mono leader-- that way if the fish breaks the line, you keep your cork and lose the leader? 15 lb braid, they said-- Not too sure but maybe I'll try both rigs and see? :P Thanks again!

EDIT:: ALSO we are going to try Texas City Dike and maybe hope for bigger things!!

I agree with Curt. 15lb big game is all I use unless I fish the gulf from my kayak then I use braid.

Well I'm a fan of pLine fluoroclear seems to handle abrasion(barnacles) well enough and is pretty lo-vis under the water. Power pro is good I run it on some of my gear but it is dead obvious to the fish when under a light. Big game Mono is good for a tight budget but the memory is kind of bad IMO. Line through popping corks tend to slip with braid in my experience unless you use rubber bands or something similar. If it is a tie off popping cork then you should be fine.
Lastly mono tends to be more forgiving compared to braid due to its ability to stretch before popping. I like braid for long hooksets for that reason.

I use 20# power pro on spinning rods for plastics and 15# Ande backcountry on casting rods for top water and spoons. Works for us.

You might think I'm crazy, but I use 10lbs braid on my spinning gear and 12lbs green Berkley Big Game on my bait casters. In all my years of fishing at the coast, bass fishing or catfishing, I've only had one giant Jack break my 12lbs line at Sout Padre Island jetties. Drag is your friend. LOL

On the rare occasions that I use conventional gear it's 10# braid on spinning reels and 12# mono on levelwinds. I mostly fly fish, and I use 12# tippets on most of the fly rods. Don't go too light on braid with a levelwind; some of them wind the line with the wraps so close together that the thin line tends to dig in and bind. If your levelwind is more of a "crosswind" you can run pretty thin diameter okay. I prefer mono on levelwinds, but if you stick with 30# or higher braid, you should be okay with most levelwinds.

power pro 30lb, 3+- ft flouro tipper usually 15-20lb ,whatever is on the boat.

Based on everyone's responses, I'll probably have a rod set up for specs with 12 lb mono/20 lb mono leader-- and then another set up with 30 lb power pro and see how it goes! I have a M/H and Med. uglystick, as well as an old zebco (launches like a beast surprisingly). Oh, and the 5ft6in ultralight uglystick.

Only reason I use 10lbs braid line is that I can cast super light baits a great distance with a spinning rig.

15 pound power pro or 10 or 12 pound big game. once you start fishing with braid you wont like regular mono in salt water, mainly because of casting distance and feel in addition to increased strength!although braid is a bit more expensive!

Joel, do you use heavier leader?

I like to use 10 pound Berkley vanish on my spinning gear and 12 pound Berkley vanish on my bait casters.
