Dan, when you get started at tying, you can go one of two ways. You can keep it simple and limit the supplies to those colors which will work most everywhere and the ones you will use the most. Like basic chenille in black, chart, white, blue, pink; and marabou and hackle in yellow chart, green chart, white, gray, and maybe a little purple. You can make a lot of crappie catching jigs with those colors. And you can paint those jig heads with finger nail polish and do just fine.
OR, you really enjoy being creative and thinking about the next color combo and then you soon have more "stuff" than you'll ever use. And then you start with powder paint for your jig heads that you molded yourself and you've fallen in the deep end. But it's oh so fun. And way cheaper than golf or sporting clays or a lot of other hobbies.

My tying kit arrived today. Now I just need to get some jig head cement and I'll be ready to go. Thanks C/A. Didn't realize you're from the same town where I graduated high school.

Shoot I'd go ahead and get started. Put a good whip finish on em. They'll stay together until you can glue em or lose um one.
