Going to Get Into Making My Own Jigs

Going to Get Into Making My Own Jigs - 05/31/15 04:58 PM

I've always been intimidated by the idea of making my own crappie jigs. I've never really investigated how to do it until recently.
I'm working at getting a tying kit and some simple materials to get started.
I'm hoping I enjoy doing it as much as I have learning how to do it.

You will quickly find tying is a great way to use your creative skills, or develop some and relieve stress. And is a great way to find some enjoyment when weather conditions won't allow you to fish. But be warned, it is addicting but very rewarding.

"tyng kit and simple materials", hmmmm take me advise and stop while you are just thinkin about it!!! Once you get that kit and tie that first jig, things start happening at exponential rates. More tying materials, more chenilles, different types of feathers, furs, flashabou, tinsel, it all starts escalating!!!!

Then comes the powder coat paint, jig molds, copious amounts of different hook sizes, etc.!!! You been forewarned! But, its a great hobby and the feelin of catchin crappie on yer own creation....PRICELESS! smile smile

Been telling everyone I saw say this for a good many years now, if you do this it will take over! Think you will just get materials to tie just what you want and I am sure have thought you would save money, LMAO! Never happen!!!
If your really ready for a great hobby that you will spend so much more than you think it will amaze you! Then this hobby is for you, but if you have to worry about your pocket book too much then maybe you should think about it a little more!

This is one super great hobby, but know this, I spent ever penny that came in and so much more that I would never make any money if I did this the reast of my life! Think that is an over statement? If you do take time to come see my room, LOL!

Most addicting thing I ever did I think and I get over the top on most things I do, but this one is king! Also know I am far from the only one like this. Some actually try to make a living at this and I guess you could if you and some other family members would tie at least 10 to 12 hours a day 7 days a week and also had most self control than one can imagine, you may be able to squeak out a get by living, but for me I only loose money!

With that said, welcome to the addiction! Enjoy and I know you will as most do, but also most fall into tying for their friends and family then that expands, LOL! Get ready for the ride of your life!

Where are some good places to get supplies?

I like to tie a few from time to time, not interested in tying 1000's

I am just getting started and I KNOW I have spent over $2000.00 (Skip got a nice chunk of it for my decked out loaded Peak Rotary vise)

Dan, when you get started at tying, you can go one of two ways. You can keep it simple and limit the supplies to those colors which will work most everywhere and the ones you will use the most. Like basic chenille in black, chart, white, blue, pink; and marabou and hackle in yellow chart, green chart, white, gray, and maybe a little purple. You can make a lot of crappie catching jigs with those colors. And you can paint those jig heads with finger nail polish and do just fine.

OR, you really enjoy being creative and thinking about the next color combo and then you soon have more "stuff" than you'll ever use. And then you start with powder paint for your jig heads that you molded yourself and you've fallen in the deep end. But it's oh so fun. And way cheaper than golf or sporting clays or a lot of other hobbies.

My tying kit arrived today. Now I just need to get some jig head cement and I'll be ready to go.
Thanks C/A. Didn't realize you're from the same town where I graduated high school.

Shoot I'd go ahead and get started. Put a good whip finish on em. They'll stay together until you can glue em or lose um one. thumb
