I am going to the Keller feed store in the morning. He got me the 100 pound bags of ground corn meal. My yard looks absolutely fabulous now but i want to get it really thick.

I'm putting out a bunch on Sunday too. As the rain chances are getting lower and I don't want any to wash away. I'm putting out a bunch of soybean meal and greensand too.

I just got some St. Augustine installed in my front yard about a month ago. The landscape contractor recommended using gluten meal in the fall to prevent fungus from the wet soil. I don't know what it is but with all this rain I guess it's time that I do a little research on it. You can get Whole Ground Cornmeal at feed stores for like $6.00 for a 40-50lb bag. Works great for fungus control. Corn Gluten Meal is typically over $30.00 a bag. Derek, thanks for the info. I appreciate it. A lot of great info from the pros here. Thanks all.

Both have their place. But don't waste money where it's not needed. CGM is a great "organic" fertilizer. As it has like 60% protein. It does have pre-emergent properties, but your timing has to be perfect or damn near it. That's why I use a synthetic pre-emergent. Soybean Meal is about 1/2 the price or less than CGM and next in line in the protein amount. About 40%. The goal with this is you're feeding the soil microbes and not the grass itself. The soil and the grass and shrubs, ect directly benefit by the bioactivity. It's a slower process to see results, but once you're on a steady program your results are solid and constant.

I do green sand every other year. It is surprising how green the lawn gets once applied. I believe its like 0-0-5

It's around 0-0-3 to 0-0-5. Going off memory I was reading some articles a few months ago how heavy rains will bind up the iron in the soil. I think it attaches to the calcium and makes it unavailable to the soil. Something like that. I'm starting to see a touch of yellowing after all this rain and the feed store has Greensand for $7ish for 50 so I'm in.

I was off a little. Had my notes here at the office. Greensand is $9.95 for 40lbs. At Boyce Feed in Waxahachie. They even sell Dry Molasses in the low $20's. I can't find it that cheap anywhere.

Thanks.
For everyone with St Augustine lawns. If you are seeing the yellowing affect of to much water, And i cant see how most are not. Lower Your mower for the next few mowing. This will help dry out the grass. And just maybe help stop the mold or disease issues found with to much water On you Lawn.

I would also like to add this. If you have Moss Roses planted it is time to top them, With all the rain they turned the flower into mush. So to get them to flower faster just tops them. My sons and i started two days ago and just now finished 800 flats that we planted for two customers. I couldn't afford to take a 8500 hit on the flower beds. It wont hurt them and they will flower sooner.

Bruce, I just put new sod about 4 months ago. It is nice and green after all of this rain but I would like it to grow thicker. How would you recommend doing this? Is it too soon to lay down some cornmeal or green sand?
TIA

Cut it as tall as you can and avoid the edges. The runners are what makes a lawn get thick. If you cut it short the runners never have a chance to root and will thin. New lawns need to be mowed less than established. You need to let it get ugly before it can be pretty. Cut it even longer in deep shade. You can come by any time and see how thick you can grow it in very dense shade, It can be done very easy, If you have been cutting it often slow down. After all its a weed treat it as such. Cut it every three weeks as high as your mower will allow. My rule is when the sprinkler heads pop up you only want to see the water not the shaft. I would do the cornmeal and green sand now. They do different things. The corn meal is for feeding your lawn conditioning the soil and fungal control of lawn. The green sand will help loosen the soil and with a rating of only 0-0-0.1 to 0-0-3. But it is the trace minerals present in green sand that prove its effectiveness, Depending on where it was dug green sand can include up to twenty five different trace minerals, including silica and magnesia. This is just my experiences helping do lawns the past 40 years. Everyone has a way, mine has worked for many with deep shade lawns
