That's a nice big water snake. They're usually pretty grumpy, even more so when they are about to shed like that one. This is a rat snake

Is it dead? Good If it ain't!! kill it Poisonous or not? Who cares
A friend once told me that there are certain snakes that can't be killed because they were endandgered.
I proceeded to tell my friend that if I got a gun and see a snake, HE WILL MOST DEFINATELY BE IN DANGER!!!

Bass fishing is like a 30,000 acre golf course with no flags and five holes you can't see- Tim

My earlier diagnosis of rat snake was based on the scales on his head, and the fact that water snakes normally strike - sideways - only when touched, and not when you look at them. They slink away. Now...were you messing with that snake? Hmmm? A rat snake will defend his space, and they hang around water. And my back patio. And my trees. I should wash more often. They look hungry. I'll give anyone $5 if they get a picture of that snake's belly. Make that $2.

Pretty sure that is a cottonmouth (water moccasin). The dark brown-black bands on the dark brown-black body with the yellow underbelly scales give it away for me. They are also very aggressive and might possibly chase you when aggitated. I have seen several just like this in creek behind my house.

Very cool pictures! Looks like he musta been grumpy, his eyes are fairly cloudy...They always get that way right before the snake is gonna shed it's skin, and snakes get really grumpy around that time.
