My first reel was the Abu Promax for about $70 and it has been good to me. It hangs in there with my Shimano Curado's.
I know a lot of guys talk about the H20 mettles too.

H20 man. I love my shimanos, but I can get 2-3 for the price of one and they H20 hold up just fine in freshwater.

I agree with the pro max, but I don't want a 7.1:1 ratio. I want something lower

Bass Pro Qualifier...wait til they go on sale and buy at least two at a time. By the way, the store will match the price on the BPS internet site.

If you're talking about new, I would have to go with the H2O Mettle. If you used is your deal, you can find some great deals on good high end reels in the Trade/Sell section here.

Snagged a couple Pro Qualifiers at the Spring Fishing Classic for $50 - it is an unbelievable reel at that price. BPS puts them on sale for $79 every once in a while but they can also be found on eBay for around $60.
Although it fits the description of a "cheap" real, I'll make a plug for the Daiwa Laguna as well. I haven't gone a whole season with the two I bought, but I have been really impressed by how smooth it is. Cabela's marked them way down to $25 so I figured they were worth trying out. Very happy so far.

Can you not wait just a bit and get a little nicer reel?
Sombody posted curado i's 129 at academy... You get what you pay for and I think your happiness and longevity of the set up is way better if you just spend a little more.
that said, 200 bucks is the max i've spent on a reel
