My son caught it today in Bear Creek near Dripping Springs. The fish was about 12-14 inches long approx 1 lb. I'm struggling with the right ID. I'm leaning towards a very large green sunfish.

If this is a green sunfish this is close to a Texas state record. We're going back to catch and take it in for official weigh-in.
Current state green sunfish record 1.3 lb - 11 inches

Thanks. Yep, green sunfish. We're going hunting again tomorrow afternoon for her. Wish us luck...if it weighs more than 1.3 lbs we're taking it to Cabela's for official weigh-in. http://www.huntstats.com/gsf.html

Nice job. You might be able to get a catch and release record based on the length of the fish.

Great point! We will re-post once we have her measured and weighed on our scale with pics. I don't think we will kill it and take it in for weighing. Fingers crossed - hope it bites again.

I can't tell from the picture, but could be a warmouth. Warmouth's are referred to as goggle eye's and rock bass. Pretty sure they are different species than green sunfish.
Have caught them up to 2 lbs in Louisiana.

Nice Green! Needs to be a minimum 10" to be considered a Catch & Release Record.
