Has anyone had this problem, and if so, what did you do to repair the problem? I have a Team Daiwa Flipping rod (7'6") that I absolutely love to use. The rod is a few years old and now the cork handle is starting to get brittle. A small piece has broken off in front of the reel seat and now another piece has broken off on the butt of the rod. Can you replace the cork handles? If so, where do you get the materials? What about removing the remaining cork and replacing with some other type of grip? I really don't want to scrap an otherwise perfectly good rod just because the cork is breaking away..

Any suggestions?

Academy has a rack of replacement parts, with a small selection of replacement corks.

Also try Barlow, they should them too. Give them a call first though, not sure.

The rear grip is no problem, remove the
old and replace with new cork or hypalon.
the front grip is more dificult unless
you can get the reel seat off, which may
be a problem. You could strip it down to
the blank and go with all new grips and
reel seat.
Academy has some rod building supplies,
and there are several mail order suppliers.
Beware-- rod repair can lead to rod
building which can become addictive.
good luck

i've never used it, but could you possibly use that tape grip they sell and just cover what you have up. i would hate to take the chance of screwing the rod up, especially if it is the L/T series. i dont think it will feel the same as it did no matter what you do.

If it small, use ground up cork and waterproof glue mix, pack the hole and sand it smooth...good as new.

Scott,

For a rod builder, this is absolutely no problem. They can pull off the existing cork, and replace with cork or hyphalon. They can even make it with the new split grip, where you have the rod blank showing in the handle.

You can get this done for about $30. I know of a few guys from the Bass Fishing Home Page that can do this.

Let me know, via email, and I'll give you a few names. You'll be out the rod for a week or two, but it'll feel brand new when you get it back.

Kelly

I decided to post a link to his site, in case anyone else is interested. I absolutely trust and recommend this particular builder. He does it in his spare time, and is very meticulous. I'm considering sending some of my Falcons in for the split rear grip.

Thanks Kelly. This particualr rod does have the split rear grip and I really like that too. I am going to check out the stuff at Academy to see if I really want to mess with it. If not, I will gladly give you a shout to get some names. Thanks again everyone.

easy repair tip is to get a wine cork, shave it down into tiny dust. mix it with epoxy, then dab it into the damaged area. after it dries, use sandpaper to fine it down to original shape... its a fly rodders tip...

Scott, I have made rods for years, and am a fanatic about rod weight, so I keep thread wraps, grips, etc to a minimum.

It is very easy to replace the split butt grip. The foregrip cork, you can very carefully remove completely, as you don't need, it's just extra weight.

Kelly, I just did a 6" Falcon Low Rider Medium Heavy, making a split rear grip, and removing the foregrip cork and thread up to first guide, and removed one ounce in weight, improving the feel tremendously. I think you will really like it if you have your's done.

WOW! One oz. in weight?! I bet on a 7 foot Cara, it would be more due to the longer handles. That's impressive! Thanks for the info.

Well, I went to Academy during lunch today to see what they had available to take on this chore. They had the hyphalon material and the only cork handles that I found were designed to fit over the entire handle, plus they had the small piece that goes in front of the reel. I know I can cut it to fit the length that I want so that's probably what I will do. As far as the foregrip cork, I am going to leave it off and see how it feels. It might be more sensitive since I will have my hand directly on the rod blank. If this doesn't work to my satisfaction, I will post back and then make some phone calls. Thanks for everyones help.
