Settle a bet between my buddy and me. I say that when leaving batteries on an automatic onboard charger indefinitely, it's okay to leave the caps on the battery. He says to take them off. Who wins the 6-pack?

I've never killed anyone, but I've read several obituaries with great enjoyment.

The caps have a built in vent so leave them on.

What if you don't have an auto onboard charging system, you take them off?

Is your buddy mentally challenged? Batteries ALWAYS have a provision to vent in case of over charge. In fact, if you take the caps off, you are actually making things worse, because you run the risk of the electrolite evaporating, which it will, if the charging voltage is too high. The plates will recover, but, you just toasted the internal integrity of the battery, which means, it may show 12 volts, but, as soon as you put a load on it, it will take a [censored]. Leave the caps on. Why anyone would even take them off is ???????

gm12440,

I just read a long series of posts in another section of the TFF about foul language usage on this website. This is a family friendly website. Please edit your post.

BTW, I agree with your POV on the caps. I leave mine on.

Thanks,
Ron

Please read the TFF Rules concerning Profanity & Personal Attacks.. Thanks

Keep the caps on. The batteries are self venting.

So why do people take the cap off then? Is that the older batteries , and people still think that is necessary?

In many cases that's the way they were taught to do it so that's how they will always do it.
