I went out twice this weekend in my 2014 ascend FS12T and found out a couple of things.
1. the included rod holder is beyond worthless.
2. I struggle with dry places to set things while i am changing lures.
I was thinking about just replacing the cheapo rod holder with a scotty since it's a similar footprint but since it has that large flat area on both sides would i be better off with Track on both sides then i would have flexibility for a holder or a bait or even a shelf.
So my question is, are there any downsides to having track rather than individual rod holders or would this be a pretty safe addition. Ok so one more question, Are all tracks created equal since and interchangeable or are there Ferrari's and Fiesta's in the track world.

I can't think of any downside to adding track. The low end track is plastic (polymer) but very affordable. Not recommended if you are planning to put heavy FF on it or bait fishing/trolling with rod mounts in them but ok with rod holders just for holding rods and other accessories. There are several varieties of metal and I can't see that any are significantly better than the other. Look at yakattack geartrac options.

I think you'll like having the track. The yak attack gear track is the best aftermarket option IMO.

If you want to add some length of track, look at this:

For about $30 or so, you can have enough track to install 2' on each side.
