With a couple of years of low rain and dropping lake water levels, you can imagine how many dead trees, limbs, bottles, cans, etc. have been accumulating on the shorelines. EM up until today has had a steady rise of 2'. This has been very gradual and trash inflow has been negligible . However, with this hard rain this morning, all this has changed. We have at least 2 inflows and 2 creeks east of my place and with all this sudden water, this has flushed everything out into the lake. It actually looks almost like some of the old pictures you see from the Northwest when they floated all the logs down the rivers.
About 10 years ago, this same thing occurred then. All I remember is that it took me about 5 days to remove approx. 2500 lbs. of trash off my shoreline. I have a feeling that this same thing is what I'm going to be doing for the rest of this week. If there are any volunteers out there, I have lots of good blue bell and plenty of shiner in the fridge.
Seriously guys, if you are getting on EM in the next couple of days, I think slow speeds would be a very wise way to travel.

I don't understand what is so difficult about putting trash into trashcans. Pretty sad.

This is off topic but there has currently been a problem with Blue Bell ice cream. Be careful.

I think it was 2007 the last time I remember huge rains, almost set the record for rainfall I think, but Granbury was the same way. There were huge debris fields, telephone poles, refrigerators and a few large propane tanks came floating down the lake. I guess it's better than the fish kills we've had over the years on Granbury

"Lake trash" has a different connotation, of course, but it is just so hard to accept that people who are obviously nature lovers, like to be outdoors and so forth, are often quite capable of tossing a bottle or a can in the water or dropping fast food paper sacks along the shore.
If I were a "pay" lake, I'd have little baggies that you could hand to entrants, tell them that if they sort of fill it up, they'll give them a dollar as they exit. It would raise awareness, get some trash picked up, too.
Two pretty clean lakes, Squaw Creek and Wheeler Branch, still have some clutter around the shores and for these lakes and others, this would be a good way to keep up the maintenance a bit.

I live on East side of EM. Man was it coming down. I was so excited I drove over to Old Spot. Was shocked to see the level lake is at now. Wouldn't be surprised if weather does what they say Twin Points ramp will be usable soon.
This is great!

I don't understand what is so difficult about putting trash into trashcans. Pretty sad. I totally agree. When the lake was at its lowest (10.93') about 2 months ago, I decided to clean up all my shoreline where the water had receded. I only have about 85' of shoreline, but I still picked up 210 cans, bottles, needles (yes, I used extreme caution when picking these up) styrofoam containers, etc. Given the opportunity, people can be and often are more sloppy than pigs. I guess I can't totally complain though. With the falling water, I have been able to increase my crank bait collection by about 5 lures. The only problem with that is that I have about 10 plano boxes full of crank baits, spinnerbaits, buzz baits, rattle traps, etc. and I very seldom even put a crank bait rod in the boat anymore. I'm old enough that slooowwww plastics fishing is about all I do. I think that if the TFF could ever get together and put on a fishing swap meet (like we used to talk about), I would be a substantial contributor to what would be available.

glad to have water back in the lake. I'll pick my battles.. I can fish around some trash and pick it up while I'm at it.

I have seen two cuts off of rivers in he last year that were so clogged with plastic bottle, Styrofoam, cans and other floating [censored] that I couldn't believe it. Personally, I wish they had never invented the resealable plastic bottle. As a recyclable cash-making item, it takes WAY too much for it to be profitable. If we went back to glass bottles and aluminum cans, you would not have a 10th of the trash in our lakes, streams, rivers, ditches, in our fields and along our roads. People would gladly pick these up to be sold for deposits and scrap. JMO.

Here is a spillway near my house on the Trinity today. Usually there is a twenty foot wide bike path across this spot. Not today!
