Let's hear everyones answer to the late spawn. I usually tie it to cold weather but we've had decent water temps for awhile now.Clueless as usual.

A lot of new water I think has changed some things. ....but we have the same scenario here and we have little new water. I've fished here and elsewhere in the state on heavy rain springs and after things settle down they are back on!!! Just Mother Nature doing her best to keep it "fishing" and not "catching"!!!!

Most of the time spawn don't get into full swing till after Easter due to weather but this year it was right 3 weeks before Easter. My guess is all the lakes gaining so much water that not only us but the fish as well are suprised and unsure. So my guess is fresh water.

Several years ago I was catching spawning crappie and spawning bream at the same time right next to each other at Lake Lavon. Since bream don't usually start spawning until May the crappie were obviously spawning late that year.

Late Winter couple with new water in lakes & unstable weather conditions oh! & don`t forget Punxsutawney Phil!!! This^ Been a real mystery this year. I've given up on theories. Last two weeks of Feb, water dropped 10 degrees to 42-44. Temps been coming up ever since and reached good spawn temps 3+ weeks ago. Story seems to be the same on all lakes in north TX. No big push to the bank, scattered fish, no pattern, females still have eggs that aren't ready, some fish still in 15-20 FOW. With the new water, fish may be where we're not looking, but I've looked in a lot of places, shallow and deep.

I can't find them deep or shallow (RayBob). In my logs of years past i've already been catching them shallow by this date and not one shallow this year.

How do u know it's late? Maybe you missed them.. Or maybe not haha? Once u think u know fishing the fish will surprise you. People were limiting out about 3 weeks on benbrook. Caught them spawning at another dfw lake last weekend. There's no doubt they should be spawning... Water temps are there.. Explore new areas?

Jbhall makes sence. Try new water on the same lakes. It's called fishing for a reason. Anyway, I am enjoying the heck out of it!
