Hello everyone, my cousins and I were talking about doing an overnight trip to the Brazos below Whitney. We were talking about starting at the dam, and working our way down. Are there camping spots between the dam and dick's? I am going to try and make the mariners club meeting on the 7th, but just in case i don't, Does anybody have an input?

I've only done that float once, about 4 years ago, so I'm probably not the best source, but here are my impressions. There are no public camping spots on that stretch, or private camps. And not a lot of islands or nice level sandbars or banks like below Possum Kingdom. There are spots that are do-able, but less than ideal. Hopefully someone with more recent experience will chime in and help you out. The fishing was great!

Thanks for the response, I was worried about. The 8 miles to dick's sounds like a heck of a paddle (then again i have never fished a river).

I've done this trip a couple times. Not much camping available on that stretch of the river. As mentioned above, you may be able to find a spot, but it will not be like PK at all. Also, not sure if they are releasing water lately, but be cautious of that as well. We usually camp at Loafer's Bend across the street from the dam and make the 8 mile trip to Dicks. It's a long trip, but can be done pretty easily and still leaves time to fish. You shouldn't have to drag much, so I would guess it would only take 2 to 3 hours if you paddled the whole way. Stopping and fishing it can be done easily in 8-10 hours. Nice stretch of river with some good holes. A few smallies in there as well. There are much more knowledgeable guys on here that I'm sure will chime in soon.

I spoke with Richard (512-468-3622) at Dick's Place about two weeks ago. He made the comment that a person can use Dick's as the staging area and go up or down river within 2 to 2.5 miles one way and camp and come back the next day. Richard eluded to he would pass on locations within this stretch that was good camping.

Just a thought if you are looking to fish and camp, while making it a leisure trip.

I've been wanting to do this trip:
Start at Dicks outpost, fish down to Brazos Nature Center North and camp, continue down the next day to the take out at Brazos River Nature Center South
It'd be a short trip with plenty of time for fishing.

Roadtrip, not sure if you saw the post by Jerry Hamon but we are doing this trip in a couple of weeks. Plans will be discussed and communicated on Tuesday 4-7 at the Mariner Sails Kayak Fishing Club Meeting.
Jerry and I did a recon trip last Sunday from the BRNCS up to the BNCN camping area and back down to the south.

I did the trip last weekend from dam to BNCS. Water is very low. Be prepared to drag a LOT especially below Dicks. There are spots to camp in tall grass along the river. Not the best camping as the ground was wet below the grass. Be sure to call the man that owns the BRNS land before you go. Jeb??? wants to know who and how many are on his property. The entrance to the property is hard to find-not marked. Look for the last little white house on the left. The entrance is on the right hand side of the road. There is a rope between two stakes near the road and a metal fence just beyond that. Be sure to leave some kind of marker that you can see when you come back down river. The air boats are horrible in that area. They are very aggressive and going very fast.
