I have a couple of surgery's coming up and want to know which is better when the boat will be in the garage for 2 or 3 months. Full tank of gas or 1/4 or less in the tank? I plan to take it out between the operations but could be a couple of months that it sets idle. Thanks

Man, I've read and heard both ways on this one. Some say leave it mostly full with stabilizer. The full tank will ensure little to no condensation in the tank. Then I've heard only leave a 1/4 and fill up with fresh gas once you take it out. Personally, I've opted for the stabilized full tank. the condensation thing just makes sense to me.

I drained mine dry while I was out with back problems, afterwards filled it up and had no issues. (I always use ring free and stabil in every tank) If you can get ethanol free gas I would say the fill up method with stabil would be good for 2 or 3 months, but would not trust it with the 10% ethanol gas most places sell.

OK since I don't have a good way of draining it in the garage I'm going to fill it up with Stabil and Seafoam added Take it to the lake and fish one last time and then put it up and hope the time it's laid up is short. This is killing me as May and April are my fav months on the lake.

You wouldn't have to worry about condensation in the garage anyway. Not real sure you ever have to worry about condensation in boat gas tanks, seems to be more fuel additive marketing hype than a reality.

I think folks worry way too much about this kind of thing.

We parked our boat for 2 months short of 2 years, so 22 months in the garage. It had a 1/2 tank of 50:1 mix gas, regular unleaded 10% ethanol mixed with penzoil 2 stroke oil (which has a stabilizer in it) and that is it. We are trading the boat in now because it was too small for the family, pretty much why we stopped using it. Took it out last weekend after charging the battery for a day and it cranked and ran fine without a hiccup.

I think most problems blamed on ethanol fuel are really caused by other issues.

WRONG! The first problem with ethanol we experienced was the stuff causes fiberglass fuel tanks to leak, then fuel lines started separating inside, phase separation and it is proven to attract water. This is an effect of ethanol.

Yes it will break down non ethanol rated lines and fuel system parts and fuel tanks... but ethanol has been present for a long time now, people shouldn't be having these issues anymore!

If your gas is in an ethanol ok tank with an ethanol resistant fuel line with current ethanol resistant internal gaskets and o'rings you should be just fine. I have had mixed gas with nothing buy two stroke oil, no other stabailzer sit for periods over a year more times than I can count and it runs fine. Do I try to do it? No, but I have a few different motors that I don't run very often so it happens. I don't leave the gas in the motors, just in a tank.

Here's my experience after working on outboards for the last 29 years. Since you are storing the boat indoors, you don't have to worry about sunlight shining on your fuel tank causing the fuel to break down faster. What I would do is treat the fuel with either Seafoam or Stabil,
either one does the same thing, IE. stabilizes the fuel. Depending on the type of outboard you have, some most carbed motors will allow you to drain the fuel from the carbs. EFI's --you can drain the
vst tank. NO fuel in system= No problems. When you get ready to refire the engine, open the bleeders and purge frest fuel from the tank thru the fuel line, thre the filters thru the carbs/Vst tank. Remove the filters, clean or replace, tighten the bleeders, prime, recharge the battery, fire that baby up. 99% of the time she will not cause you any problems. Or to make life simple, pull her out of the garage, fire her up on a water hose, once a month, and be done with it. Let her run at least ten minutes to move enough fuel thru it to be getting fresh fuel from the tank and allow the engine to reach operating temp.

People are still running their boats on non-ethanol fuel but it is getting harder to find. Corn ethanol is a lot more corrosive and has less btu`s than ethanol made from sugar cane or saw grass. The alcohol we used in race cars we ran years ago was not corn ethanol.

Mine sits for 4 months every year during hunting season. Use stabil always. No issues. I keep as little gas as possible in the tank

Mine never is idle very long but when is I start it every 2 weeks and let it run on muffs, then top off all batteries, do this year round, or just fish it weekly and use sea foam. I keep tank full.
