After catching Sand Bass this week (Tuesday), I brought them home in an ice chest on ice and kept them frozen from the time they were caught until this morning. I wasn't able to clean them right away due to work. If they were frozen for 36 hours or so, do you think they are still good to eat after cleaning? Their gills were still red/pink, not gray. Thanks for any advice.

Yes, they are good to go. If grills are reddish then no need to worry about.

Yes they will be fine as long as they are packed in ice the full time.2 days at MAX.. If the fish eyes are clear and not cloudy, and the body has not lost color and the fish gills are red..You will be ok. Keep a towel on top of the ice tucked in tight--to keep the cold down into the fish.Make sure you check the ice to make sure there is a lot of ice on fish..if not repack with more ice till ready to clean. ...DO NOT LET THEM FLOAT IN WATER IN ICE CHEST...
The fish have enough drugs in their body from the local waters anyways..Ha Ha

I've seen fish strung on a vine hanging in the market over in Viet Nam covered in yellow fly eggs and old Mamma Sons bought them and took them home to eat. I never ate any of their food , just C Rations for me.
From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."
Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

I had a guy from Viet Nam work for me for awhile, he came off the shrimp boat and was always telling about hanging shrimp in a sack to let them dry and eating them, go figure.

As stated above, if the gills are pink/red you should be good

They may be alright to eat, but the taste of fish changes with time and condition.... Fresh caught fish.. cleaned shortly after they come out of the water and still alive when you clean them are the best... Same with live fish from a live well... but frozen fish seem to lose some of the good taste in my opinion... and if they die or belly up, even in cool or cold water, their taste changes... I really don't like eat fish which have been dead more than an hour, even when they are kept in cold water or on ice.. maybe it is just me, but I believe I can tell the difference.... Just me.

I kill them with a blow to the head, and clean them and freeze them. If you put ice and water in a freezer bag to freeze them fast, they lose no flavor.

When I fish from my boat I have two ice chests. One is for food and drinks and the other is for the fish. The fish go straight from the hook to the ice chest. I usually clean them the same day, but the longest I've kept them on ice was overnight. I never noticed any difference in taste or firmness of the filet. Just make sure you have enough ice so the fish aren't floating in water.
Just one more cast!
