I need to know the Spark Advance Degrees for a 1984 Evinrude 150HP. The sticker is gone from my motor. That said I have know idea what that means. I am attempting to check the timing on this motor and timing is something I have never messed around with before.

I have a Clymer manual but it is Greek when I'm reading it. I found this on iboats which makes a bit more sense to me.

(Timing At Cranking Speed 4)
(J. Reeves)

NOTE: If your engine has the "Fast Start" feature", you must disconnect/eliminate that feature in order to use the following method. The "Fast Start" automatically advances the spark electronically when the engine first starts, dropping it to normal when the engine reaches a certain temperature.

The full spark advance can be adjusted without have the engine running at near full throttle as follows.

To set the timing on that engine, have the s/plugs out, and have the throttle at full, set that timer base under the flywheel tight against the rubber stop on the end of the full spark timer advance stop screw (wire it against that stop if necessary).

Rig a spark tester and have the gap set to 7/16". Hook up the timing light to the #1 plug wire. Crank the engine over and set the spark advance to 4 less than what the engine calls for.

I don't know the full spark advance setting your engine calls for, but to pick a figure, say your engine calls for 28, set the timing at 24. The reasoning for the 4 difference is that when the engine is actually running, due to the nature of the solid state ignition componets, the engine gains the extra 4.

If you set the engine to its true setting at cranking speed, when running it will advance beyond its limit by 4 which will set up pre-ignition causing guaranteed piston damage! You don't want that to take place.

No need to be concerned about the idle timing as that will take care of itself. The main concern is the full advance setting.

Be sure to use your own engines spark advance settings, not the one I picked out of the air here in my notes.

So my second question is if I follow these directions where do I mark on the flywheel so I can check the timing? I don't understand that part. If I set the throttle to full is the timer base suppose to be against the stop? If it is not do I adjust the stop or the cable?

You first need to check the TDC mark using # 1 cylinder and a spark plug stop. You rotate crankshaft by hand all clockwise until it stops (mark the flywheel) same the opposite direction, TDC is the center between marks. I set the total timing by first disconnecting the throttle cable and removing the sparkplugs, connect timing light to connected #1 grounded spark plug, mark desired degree with caulk or welders marker. To accomplish this by your self you will need a remote starter sw-button. I remove the throttle cable so the timing advance arm can be tested for easy movement (these motors are known for the timing base to get dirty and stick) If movement is not free and easy the flywheel and stator will have to be removed to allow cleaning the timer base good enough. Re connect Set the timing stop at 26 degrees for a total timing of 28 degrees. This is back 2 degrees because of todays fuels.

Gary if I understand correctly what I need to do is mark with the 26 degree spot on the flywheel. With all plug wires grounded I attach timing light to wire #1. I then move by hand the timer base up against the stop and then have the motor cranked. The timing light will flash and depending on if I need to speed flash up or down to sync the flash with the mark I screw the stop in or out?

Is this basically the WOT timing and how to do it?

Great! I broke a spark plug so headed to buy another. The timing was off so I made the proper adjustments I hope. Anything else I need to know before I put it back together.

IT'S RUNNING!!!!!! THE MOTOR IS RUNNING!!!!

I love solving problems! I had never messed with timing before and to tell the truth I was really concerned I would mess it up but I was able to learn and the motor fired on the second try! It sounds great. I found a small water leak on the rectifier but that is an easy fix.

Thank you Gary for the help! It would have taken me a lot longer to solve the problem with out your help. You are the man! cheers
