I found this on line after hearing about it from about it from my county tax office.
This article on line says effective March 1,2015

Ignored for years

Texas law has for decades required annual safety inspection of trailers with a gross weight (weight of the trailer plus its carrying capacity or actual load) of more than 4,500 pounds. That includes travel trailers, most dual-axle boat trailers, and many larger utility trailers such as those hunters use to haul tractors, ATVs, blinds and other equipment to hunting leases.

It's based on what is shown on the registration. If your trailer registration does not show 4,501# or more then you don't have to have it inspected.

Look at the data tag on the trailer and the trailer registration for the weight....it's only $14.50 and a safety inspection at that....for me it's easy to do it and spend more time enjoying fishing and not worrying about getting a ticket or being stopped.

Interestingly, I checked this week at my local inspection station. Yes, they inspect trailers. But they no longer issue a sticker to attach to the trailer....only post the passage of the trailer on line. There is no requirement seems to carry proof on the trailer/pulling vehicle anymore and the officers, unlike the registration office, seem to have no means to determine the status of the inspection until the trailer registrations (license tag stickers supported by trailer inspections) are replaced over the next several months.

Unless the highway Patrol pulls you over and happens to want to weigh it. And you happen to be over the 4501 lbs.

Got a letter in the mail telling me I have to get my trailer inspected before I can renew my tags online. Tried to go online and renew, and was blocked. Sent them an email to find out the details.

How many times have you seen License&Weights with a boat on the scales?

Not many at all, But did you read the article about a week and half ago about them already starting to check a lot of the parking ares at the boat ramps?

Even though stickers are no longer being issued, you should receive a printout at the time of inspection showing the results. Spend the $14.40, put the paper in your glove box, and go fishing. $14.50 is cheap insurance against harassment from a cop with too much time on his hands and no donut shop close by.

If you get a registration sticker then you are legal, no two ways about it.
