Heading to Matagorda next week. Are the jetties worth fishing. If so, any tips are appreciated for this time of year. Also, other areas accessable with a boat.
'Appreciate your help!

the mouth of the Colorado River at Matagorda is great fishing, also the ICW, East Matagorda and West Matagorda Bay. the jetties at Pt O'Conner are also great.

I noticed I had a typo in my original question. I DO NOt have a boat, can one fish from the Matagorda jetties? If so, would you use the same techniques as you would at the Port A jetties? Recommended rigging, bait, channel or surf side for this time of year. How is the surf fishing in this area in mid March?

Thank Smooth Move, any additional thoughts?

You can fish from the two north jetties. You'd need a boat to access the south jetty. I throw big flies off there sometimes with a heavy fly rod, but I wouldn't know what to recommend for conventional tackle. There are three fishing piers there, and the two at the RV park (not sure about the third; it's about a half mile upriver but still part of the nature park) have big green lights on a timer. The trout usually gang up around them at night.

Thanks Jim, I assume, this time of year some black drum move by the Matagorda Jetties, but just have not fished there. Just looking for tips from those that have fished them or the river above. I'll try the dock with the lights, Thanks Again. Anyone else have any suggestions??

IF you get tired of the surf I have had a lot of luck in the ICW at times. Head east on the road that passes the cemetery right before town. When you get to the bridge there is a rough road that you can drive to the water. Fish in the middle or if you throw across the draw there is an oyster bed there. Have caught a little bit of everything there including flounder. There are a few other places you can get to the water on down the road too if it is too crowded there.
Another place is if you head down the roads back behind the hotel by the store, you can get to a place where the river and ICW come together. Have had fun there too.

Good luck!
