Recently I've seen the new Ugly Stik spinning rod in a 9 foot medium action version. I can see how it might be good for redfish/trout in salt water. I wonder how it would do bank fishing for largemouth?
Any experience or thoughts -pro or con?
Might be worth $40 just to see.
Thanks in advance.

You talking about the GX2?
My dad and I sometimes use the 9' ugly stick gx2 for bank bass fishing or really freshwater bank fishing. Personally dont see anything wrong with it. But some people will stare at you tho.

I would stick with 6-7-feet long. They work well with variety of lures. I would go up to 8-feet, but 9 is overkill IMO. Of course, if you have extra 40 bucks and the money is just standing in wallet why not to make that buy and report back to us how it went.?

I wouldn't use a 9 foot rod for day to day fishing--cumbersome to transport and trees/bushes would get in the way, particularly bank fishing.
However, 9 foot medium action rods are ideal for certain situations--casting very light weight lures from a boat (float and fly technique). It would also be good from a boat to stick the rod deep into a group of thick trees, and just drop a jig straight down.
From the bank, I'd recommend 6'6" or 7'. From a boat, the nine footer has some limited applications.

I use a 10' spinning rod all the time. I like it a lot. I custom built it from a flyrod blank into a spinning rod. I've landed everything from 15+ lb steelhead up north to bluegills on the thing. I can cast light spinners a long way with 4lb test, and the rod is very forgiving when fighting fish on light lines.

I use an 8 and half like a boss for float and fly.

Thanks for all the responses. I think it is the GX2. Red and black. Foam grip. It is a 2 piece rod. Being an Ugly Stik and partly fiberglass it is on the thick and heavy side. I will give it some more consideration and report if I get one. Thanks again.

I use an 8'6" Lamiglas medium action from the shore all the time and love it. Long casts, good hook sets, better line control, and I can reach over shoreline vegetation. For forty bucks I think it's worth a try.

I use long rods a lot. Heck I would like to find a couple cheap, lighter weight rods 11, 12 foot long. I think they call that fishing European style. There are lots of ways to cast a spinning rod in tight quarters, BTW. Check out some of the Youtube videos on jungle fishing, I think is what they call it across the pond.
If you aren't sure about making the $40 commitment, the Shimano FX rod comes in 9ft, is a lot lighter than the older ugly sticks, not sure about the GX2 though. Academy sells them, I have two and like them a lot, they cast light stuff, and heavier stuff also, it is a MH, wish it came in medium.

9 ft rods are alittle too much for banking LMB. The only advantage i see is the long cast, but who needs to cast far in spring?
I have a 9 ft Penn prevail, but thats only for stripers and hybrids.
I recommend a 7 ft MF for banking LMB.

Would be great for shoreline fishing when the sandbass are busting the surface just out of normal casting reach.

I have the very rod you are talking about, the 9' GX2 Ugly Stick. I love it for the jetty for flipping small jigs or free lining live shrimp. If the GX2 is too heavy for you, take a look at some steelhead rods. They are hard to find down here but you might find them at a Cabela's or Bass Fro Chops.

I bought myself a 9'6" spinning float n fly rod about a week or so ago. This'll be the first rod over 7'6" that I will have fished with. I have fished with poles from 9' up to 13' though.
On the bank fishing note, if you are bank fishing with weights or lures 1/8th oz and up, spinning rods 6' to 7'6" are a must.

With the lakes so low the deeper water is a long cast from shore. The long rod can cast a light lure or bait out to deeper water.
