Thanks for reminding people of this. I remember the first time I caught a hybrid on Conroe and thought it was a white bass except for the size and fight. It is a shame that people would intentionally take a undersized fish that cannot reproduce out of our lakes before they ever get to their peak potential. Hybrids are a great resource in the lakes for fun fighting and quality eating when they reach legal size and we should do everything we can to help protect them.

good post and great reminder to those who don't have this info memorized yet.

it is tough sometimes. PK has never had hybrids stocks but I've caught fish that exhibit all the characteristics. I've also seen some big hybrids taken out. How they got there is anyone's guess. When I asked about the fish below, it was a bout 50/50 hybrid vs sandbass. The lines were dark and at least three went all the way to the tail.
John 21:3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee.

Great post. I have to admit that "back in the day" I caught and kept a few small hybrids running with the sand bass, but fortunately learned the difference. Sometimes there is a close resemblance between a big white and a 14"-16" hybrid, but you have to look at all three things (body shape, stripes and tooth patch).
In my experience, most fishermen want to do right. I do have the 800 number in my phone for those very few that don't.
Thanks BlueTuna.

Here is a nice little app from TPWD called the Outdoor Annual! This gives you specific sizes for each species of fish and is referenced by lake. Most lakes are the same in Texas, but a few have special laws to go by. All the same every fisherman should have this on their smart phone. Instructions on each phone category is listed on the home page. Happy Fishing Garry https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual/app/

Does anyone have any more pictures of the single tooth patch? I'm pretty new to all this and for the most part, I am able to identify the doubles pretty easily, but I always seem to have difficulty spotting the singles. Even in the picture posted above, I don't see anything. I have been mostly going off the single stripe and size. I've been throwing bigger fish back and obviously double tooth patch goes back in right away. I caught a few hybrids in the creek this past week, all too small to keep, but very fun to catch. I always err on the side of caution, but I would really like to be able to identify the single tooth patch more clearly. Perhaps I'm not holding my mouth just right to see them?

Check out that site that big D linked to earlier.. it's got a good picture of a white without the wording over the picture. http://www.seagrant.wisc.edu/home/Default.aspx?tabid=604
