I know you aren't suppose to paint your yak but I hate the color combo of my 12 foot pelican. I know that it will be a while before I can afford to get a Hobie (which is what I really want), but my pelican I have used for both saltwater and freshwater and have done pretty well. I just don't like the way it looks so I decided to change that. Here is what it looks like before and so far. Not done yet thanks to this gross cold weather not painting anytime soon. I sanded it down with 60 grit then moved to 80, 120 and then painted a base coat after cleaning it and rubbing it down with 91% isopropyl alcohol. Then the next day wet sanded it with 220,320 and 400 grit. I will finish painting with a coat or two of clear coat. I did decide to use the Krylon Fusion paint. I have spray painted tons of stuff over the years including door panels for a truck and other plastic parts so we will see if it stays on half way decent after my first few trips. I will try and keep yall posted. I read a ton about painting or mostly not painting but didn't hear much about after time passed how it held up.

Gotta say, I'm not sure I've ever seen a full-on color change for a kayak; just the deck for camp purposes. You definitely did a thorough job on the prep work. Keep us updated on the durability.

I have two pelicans, got them a great price. I kind of like my original green color, but that paint job is awesome, even upside down. I will be interested in how the paint holds up over time.

How many cans of paint did it take? But more importantly, how many cans of beer?

Seriously, good prep work and looks good thumb - let us know how it holds up (or down depending on how you post pics).

Thanks guys. I will definitely keep everyone updated since I couldn't find any reviews after the paint job was done I thought it was time someone gave some good or bad feedback on how it turns out later on down the line. Anyone have any ideas why my photos never post properly? I have an iPhone 6 and have never had any issues on other forums. Thanks for any help?

Good color choice. Hopefully it holds up well for you this summer.

If you have that same color available in the rattle can you can easily touch up now and then.
I think you did a great job personally.

Just one more cast!

Thanks for fixing the photos. Thanks Jimbo. Yeah definitely going to keep a can around for the occasional touch ups.

Here is the final on the paint job. It is a little dusty so it is not as bright as it truly is. I will be putting LEDS on it in the next week or so.
Any ideas why all my pics post wrong?
