My son's interest in fishing has finally peaked after taking him rainbow trout fishing recently. I grew up mainly salt water fishing along the coast and its been a long time since I've done any freshwater fishing. Im in Longview so the closest lake is lake o the pines. Any suggestions when/where/how to take him? I dont have a boat so it'll all have to be access by foot. Thanks guys.

I would recommend chasing bluegill (bream) for a 6 year old. The bite is usually faster and is just as much fun catching as anything else if you use light weight rods and reels. I would recommend Extra Bright Colored Maggots for bait as their active wiggling attracts bluegill to bite. Plus they are tough and stay on the hook which is great for young kids.

Teague park in Longview was recently stocked with rainbow trout and is slap full of bream. I would take him there with some small corks and tiny pieces of night crawlers. Nothing beats watching a cork go under.

A great place to take a 6 year old is Bluegill Lake Cabins just south of Canton. They have nice cabins with fishing piers that go out over stocked ponds for bream and tilapia. It's a great place for a weekend getaway for the family and your son would have a blast there. I have taken my grandson there and we had a great time together. Just be sure and get your bait before you go there. They don't sell any baits or fishing supplies at the location.
