I ordered a rear reel seat crappie rod yesterday and went to Academy to look at what they had to offer.
The best looking one was the Wally Marshal Solo reel.
But looks mean nothing because this reel was for left handed reeling and it did not have an anti reverse on it.
So it's not for me unless someone knows something I don't
So if anyone uses rear seat rods, what reel do you have on it? And what would you recommend?
Thanks

You will more than likely mount your reel on the bottom side of the rod so a left hand retrieve isn't outta the question. Friend of mine fishes with one and uses a spinning reel...Pflueger president.. Most spinning reels can be either right or left hand retrieve...

Thanks for the response Jig Man....That's exactly what I was planning on using was a Flueger either open face micro or closed face trigger micro. I've got a few Fluegers laying around not being used. I was just wondering if most reels like the Solo are left handed and without anti reverse?

Hey texboxer, I have a 9ft Wally Marshall solo rod and the Shimano Sienna 1000 works perfectly with it. Any 1000 or 10 series spinning reel would probably work just fine with the 9ft. You may go to a 2500 or a 20 series spinning reel if you have the 10 ft rod. You should be able to try some of the demo reels at Academy to see how certain reels balance on your rod. You'll also want to know where the balance point is on your rod when paired with different reels. Proper reel/rod balance is especially important if you fish extended periods of time and don't want to deal with premature arm fatigue. Hope this helps.

That's a thought.
Thanks
Only problem is, I know absolutely nothing about fly fishing reels.
Hopefully the reels aren't as expensive as most of the fly rod I priced. HOLY MOLY! are they expensive!

I haven't used it, but it looks like a vertical application type reel...

It is an Ozark 10'.
Arm fatigue (arthritis) is the main reason for trying a rear seat rod.
So much length is lost in a regular rod because of the butt and to use that extra length it causes fatigue.
So I figured if the real is on the back and balanced correctly, fatigue wouldn't hit as quickly as with a regular rod.
Arthritis in my shoulders is a booger to say the least.
Thanks for the info

You're welcome and you're right...some of the length of a spinning rod with a conventional reel seat is negated. Just to make sure that you pair your rod correctly, you should be able to take your rod to Bass Pro or Cabelas or even Academy and just do some experimenting with various reels. I've heard about Arthur(Arthritis)and know it's no fun so I surely hope everything works out for you.

Hey Tex, just get you an 8' pro angler, I got a few in last week. They are super light.
I put a Shimano Sedona 1000 on mine, it feels pretty good.

i have a rear seat and I am trying a right hand retreive bait casting reel upside down. I will use this set up for fishing 14' or less water. With a 10 ' rod I can lift anything 10' deep or by grasping the line between reel and 1st eye can extend another 4'. I think it will work ok on most crappie

Here's what I use just to give you another option. I like a rear seated spinning reel with the backbone of a fly rod and a sensitive tip. I'm about to put a Pro Angler tip on this fly rod to see if I like it better than the tip I have. All my reels are Flueger Presidents.

Yes sir, I do love my pro angler rods. Let me know how that Sedona works out for ya.

Thanks, it seems a spinning reel is the way to go.
I've got plenty laying around not being used, just wasn't sure how it would work.
Seems many use this method.
So now I can stop worrying about it.
Thanks to all for the responses.
